Episode of the Week: ’48 Hours’

SG-1: Season Five
First Aired: March 15, 2002

After an accident with the Stargate traps Teal’c in transit, SG-1 must turn to Russia — and to their enemies — for help before time runs out.

“48 Hours” Facts:

  • The original draft title for this episode was “Teal’c Interrupted,” a play on the 1999 film Girl, Interrupted.
  • The episode begins with a rather unceremonious end for recurring villain Tanith, who can be seen just briefly piloting the ship that Teal’c shoots down. Producers had been unable to reach a deal with the actor for a return appearance, and opted to write him out rather than leave the character’s storyline (and Teal’c’s need to avenge the murder of his beloved Shau’nac) dangling. (The face of actor Peter Wingfield was digitally inserted.)
  • “48 Hours” marks the very first appearance of David Hewlett in the role of Dr. McKay, who’s “always had a thing for dumb blondes.” He would return for the SG-1 Season Six premiere “Redemption” before being cast as a series regular in Stargate Atlantis. (Only then did we learn his first name, Rodney … which turned out later to be his middle name.)
  • Bill Marchant, who played the Goa’uld who took over the body of wealthy man Adrian Conrad a few episodes earlier, taught acting and screen-writing at the Vancouver Film School. (See the link below for our interview with him. Incidentally, Marchant was the very first actor interview GateWorld ever published!)
  • This episode introduced the idea that the Stargate has a “buffer.” It not only forms the stable wormhole allowing for instantaneous travel, but the gate itself has internal systems that record a traveler’s “pattern” (to borrow a term from Star Trek) before rematerialization. All at once, viewers learned that the Stargate was less a big, stone ring and more an advanced computer.
  • Poor Siler … After being electrocuted by the exploding D.H.D. at the end of the episode, Sgt. Siler (stuntman Dan Shea) is on the receiving-end of a Jack O’Neill classic: “Shake it off, Sparky!”

  • How young and skinny is David Hewlett.
Loved that snarky Dr. McKay, just the pain in Carters face when ever he talks.
    Too fun.

  • McKay's first appearance, when he was simply an idiot. It makes you so thankful that they decided to recast him for Atlantis, so this man here would redeem himself and eventually become one of the coolest characters in television history. :D

On a side note, bullet 2 needs to be revised. I think some content was accidentally backspaced or something.

  • The only thing that really stood out to me was how different McKay looked in this episode compared to when he was cast in Atlantis. Lol. Other then that, I didn't feel that this episode was all that exciting.

  • Loved the scene when Jack Meets Harry.
*can't say the previous because of swears and hate censoring*
    Maybourne: There are people watching
    O'Neill: I don't care.
