Episode of the Week: ‘Within the Serpent’s Grasp’

SG-1: Season One
First Aired: March 6, 1998

SG-1 escapes through the Stargate before it is shut down, and learns that Daniel’s alternate reality vision is true: Apophis is moving to attack Earth from above. The team must stop Apophis and his son, Klorel, who inhabits the body of their friend Skaara.

“Within the Serpent’s Grasp” Facts:

  • This episode introduced a piece of alien technology that would become a signature mark of Stargate SG-1: It’s the very first appearance of the zat gun!
  • There are two versions of the scene where Teal’c describes the long-range visual communications device to the team. The original version aired on Showtime, and has O’Neill replying, “Think it gets Showtime?” When the show aired in syndication and on The SCI FI Channel, O’Neill’s reply was changed to the Homer Simpson-esque “Mmmmmm … Goa’uld TV …”
  • For those keeping score at home, the original version of the first season finale also had one of the only swears that made it to screen on Stargate: After Klorel tells Jack that nothing of a host survives the Goa’uld blending process, he replies, “That’s bullsh*t!”
  • Actor Brent Stait took up the role of Major Louis Ferretti (the soldier played by French Stewart in the feature film) in the show’s first episode. He returns here for a brief appearance — the character’s last.

  • I liked this episode but always got the feeling they were acting like petulant children. Though at the same time I'm glad they had the sacks to do what was necessary to save Earth.
