Stargate Atlantis‘s favorite Satedan warrior is king of the box office. After years in development Jason Momoa’s Aquaman finally hit the big screen this past weekend, pulling in $67.4 million domestically.
The latest entry in the DC universe of films is headed for a $100 million five-day opening in the U.S., according to Box Office Mojo. (Christmas Day is typically the busiest day of the year for theaters.)
Behind Aquaman last weekend is Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns, at $23.5 million, and Paramount’s Bumblebee with $21.6 million.
The movie opened with special Amazon Prime exclusive screenings two days earlier, bringing its total to $72.1 million.
Aquaman opened two weeks earlier worldwide, where it has ridden the #1 spot to $410.7 million (including a stellar $232.8 million in China). Including Monday and Tuesday, it’s now crossed $500 million in its worldwide total. It’s tracking to be the the highest grossing film in the DC cinematic universe.
Momoa made his debut as Arthur Curry in 2016’s Batman v. Superman, and co-starred in 2017’s Justice League.
The actor played Specialist Ronon Dex on Stargate Atlantis.
Directed by James Wan, Aquaman has a 64% freshness rating on Rotten Tomoatoes, but boasts an audience score of 82%.
