Avatar to launch Stargate Atlantis comic line

Avatar Press will begin publishing a monthly Stargate Atlantis comic book series this summer, GateWorld has learned. Written by Stuart Moore with art and cover illustrations by Mauricio Melo, the new series will debut in July with the three-part series “Wraithfall.”

“With the great fan support we have received on our Stargate SG-1 comic releases, it was only natural for us to expand into the galaxy of Stargate Atlantis,” Avatar editor-in-chief William Christensen told GateWorld. “As we have done with SG-1, we plan on setting our Atlantis series inside of the existing show continuity. We will offer up all the action, excitement, and Wraith mayhem that we can pack into the pages!”

Avatar will preview the series with a special, 16-page issue, with a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the new comic and the “Wraithfall” story. The preview issue will be available in April and limited to 5,000 copies with three covers (pictured here).

“In Wraithfall, the Atlantis team meets the Karrans, a primitive race that has made a bizarre deal with the Wraith. Major Sheppard is determined to stop the Wraith at any cost … but can he do it without destroying the Karrans’ lives?”

April will also see the release of the 2005 Stargate SG-1 convention special issue, in five different covers. Here’s how Avatar describes that story:

“Pinned down by invisible attackers the SG-1 team discovers that the Goa’uld have uncovered the secrets to the Nox invisibility technology. They appear on the verge of being overrun when Anteaus and his Nox companions appear among them and help dispatch the attacking Jaffa. Anteaus reveals that one of their own has turned from the peaceful life journey to embrace the Goa’uld philosophy. The team is forced to find a way to stop the traitor before she can make the already powerful Goa’uld invincible!”

GateWorld’s own managing editor, Darren Sumner, will continue to serve as a continuity editor for both comic series.
