Emmy Award nominated composer
Joel Goldsmith discussed his recent work creating many new musical themes for the new characters of both
Stargate SG-1 and
Stargate Atlantis in a new interview with
The Scifi World.”The beginning of
Season Nine of
Stargate SG-1 was a tremendous undertaking, musically,” Goldsmith said. With the introduction of many new characters, he found an opportunity to introduce new themes to go with each one.”I did expand on
Vala’s themes and developed three new themes for the
Ori, the Doci, and the Priors. Each theme interrelates yet are somewhat unique as well.”For
Atlantis‘s second season, Goldsmith wrote new themes for
Ronon Dex. The composer sees an exciting relationship between
John Sheppard and Ronon. So he wrote a special theme — “although it’s not an action theme, which you might have expected considering the character,” he said. “Instead I scored his sensitive side, a more introspective look at a larger than life character.”For the episode
“Critical Mass,” Goldsmith wrote the music for
Teyla’s song with his sister, Ellen. They had been working on an album for children’s songs when they got the call from executive producer Brad Wright. “The writers of the show had supplied us with the lyrics and Ellen and I wrote the music,” Goldsmith explained.
Rachell Lutrell flew down to Los Angeles to record the song in Goldsmith’s studio.”I was pleasantly surprised at what a skilled singer Rachel was and it made my job so much more enjoyable,” he said. “But what was the most fun was having ‘Teyla’ in the studio!”
Stargate SG-1 has a separate closing theme from the main title. But the same music is used for the opening and ending credits on
Atlantis. “I’m thinking about maybe making a new end title … next year,” Goldsmith said. “I don’t know … again, it’s a matter of time.”Look for the entire interview with Joel Goldsmith at
