Stargate Action Figure Q&A (Part 4)

GateWorld continues its Q&A with Stargate action figure creator Diamond Select Toys, with questions submitted by readers at GateWorld Forum! We’re now taking questions for the next round, so visit the forum if you have a question you don’t see answered here — or in Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3 of our on-going Q&A.

The first wave of Stargate SG-1 action figures will be available at comic book and specialty stores and online in July. Wave 2 is set for this fall.

Reader questions appear below in bold. Our thanks to Diamond Select’s Michael Leavey for answering our questions!

Specific Figures

Will we see any special variant figures? O’Neill with his baseball cap and sunglasses for example? Daniel with his Season One “floppy fringe?” “Battle damaged” Jaffa?
If the question is are those specific variants planned at this time, then the answer is “no.” Have we considered them? “Yes” — but we have lots of other ideas we’re tossing around, as well.

Are there any plans to make an Ascended Daniel Jackson with the famous blue robes he wore on Vis Uban or the robes he wore on Abydos?
Ascended Daniel is a big part of the character storyline but it’s not planned for series 1 or 2.

The Jack O’Neill likeness seems to be off. Are you pleased with it?
The studio and DST are very pleased with it and, based on the e-mails we’ve received, most fans seem happy with the Preview figure and the FCBD figure.

Is there going to be a blue BDU base uniform of General O’Neill like the green one (another chase figure)?
No plans at this time.

Will the Thor figure be in scale with the other figures, or will he be seven inches tall as well?
He will be in scale with the other figures (much shorter).

It has been said that the WWLA limited Jack O’Neill figure has scars on his cheek. Was this a deliberate feature? If so, why? Was it to distinguish it from the regular release of the figure?
It was just a small paint error at the overseas factory.

About the WWLA O’Neill: Is the glossy look just for this figure or will the final release have this glossy paint? The FCBD one is flat, I sure hope the final figures are flat paint as well.
The WWLA was a pre-production figure, we made several revisions along the way after that figure’s release.

Is there going to be something done with the actual production Jack figure to allow him to hold his P-90? The WWLA figure doesn’t seem to be able to hold it very well at all.
We’ve tested a couple here and he seems pretty able to hold the P-90.

At Toy Fair, several of the figures were shown with just T-shirts and no jackets. Will these be separate variants or will the figures come with extra arms and removable jackets?
Some of the items show at Toy Fair were not cleared for photography so they are creating confusion. Part of the reason we showed the torsos without the jackets was just for the buyers to see the quality of the figures so they could see they were sculpted in actual layers to provide as much realism as possible. The figures will NOT have removable jackets.

Any word on the other O’Neill and Daniel Jackson variants shown at Toy Fair that have not been officially confirmed or announced? Have any retailers shown interest in taking these variants on as exclusives?
To date no retailer has stepped up for a Daniel exclusive EXCEPT for Time & Space. They will have a T-shirt Daniel as a companion piece to the FCBD T-Shirt Jack.

Is Daniel going to have the vest? We don’t ever see him pictured with it other then the variant camouflaged one.
Off-world Daniel will come with his vest.

Is the “Jaffa Warrior Teal’c” exclusive to shopafx.com? And will he come with the Serpent Guard helmet and First Prime cape?
Jaffa Teal’c is not AFX-exclusive — it’s available to anyone that orders through Previews. No, it does not come with the cape.

There have been reports of people having difficulty in tracking down comic stores who provided the Jack O’Neill figure for Free Comic Book Day. Is there any chance DST will be able to sell these figures on the DST site store or anywhere else?
We are not able to sell these. They were only approved for production as a promo figure. There are quite a few releases, so hopefully everyone that wants one can still track one down.

What’s going on with the camo figures? Which body parts and deco is the final figure going to have, and what is the availability?
If you mean desert camo, then there are no current plans for those versions for series one.

I’m thoroughly confused. More and more pictures keep popping up with different Daniel and Jack figures in different outfits. Could you please tell us ALL the figures and variants that will be released with wave 1? Including those that are extremely limited, or only available at special events, or only promotional items or whatever? What’s really going to be out there?
SURE! Here they are in order:

Pre-Production Jack – released for WWLA – green off-world
T-Shirt general Jack – released for FCBD
Pre-production Daniel (Time & Space) – released for WWPhilly, T-shirt
Series 1 core Jack – green off-world
Series 1 short pack General Jack – green BDU
Series 1 Black-Ops Jack (Previews exclusive) – Black OPS off-world wool cap
Series 1 core Daniel – off-world green
Series 1 core Jaffa – generic head
Series 1 mail away – Elite guard

Accessories

Are you planning a carded accessories set with belts, sidearms with holsters, knifes and canteens? My Jack is borrowing a sidearm, holster and knife from my McFarlane Military figure but you can’t remove their belts. Jack would never go off-world without ALL his gear.
Sorry, no accessory packs planned at this time.

The staff weapon seems a bit out of proportion. Are there any plans to change this?
The staff weapon is already in production.

Will the guard be able to hold the staff with both hands?
It can be held and lay across.

Will you be able to take their outfits off? Will the zips and buttons be made of real metal or plastic?
No, the outfits are not removable.

In the latest pics of the SG-1 figures, I see that General O’Neill has a P-90. When the figure comes out, will he still have the P-90? What other accessories will he come with?
General Jack does come with a P-90. He also has a zat, a G.D.O., and a walkie talkie. And don’t forget part of the Gate.

Will “Colonel Jack O’Neill” and “Black Ops Jack O’Neill” have the same weapons?
Yes.

The Gate

Just how big will the gate actually be? If this gate is going to be anywhere close to scale, then the blister packages that these figures come on will have to be larger than normal production blister packages, right?
There is no way to make it in scale — if we did that, it would be over 3 feet tall. But it’s pretty big.

Will you have to get the variants as well as the main figures to get the complete Stargate?
No. All the Jacks will come with the same piece as would any Daniels, so you don’t have to buy multiples of the same character.

Do “General Jack O’Neill,” “Black Ops Jack O’Neill,” and “Colonel Jack O’Neill” come with the same piece of the Stargate?
Yes.

If you release Atlantis figures, would you do the Atlantis gate?
If the SG-1 gate is well received — we’d love to!

Distribution & Availability

Are the figures going to come out in Australia anytime soon, or are we going to wait like we have to wait for pretty much everything down under?
We have a distributor in Australia and he gets shipped the same time as the U.S. (pretty much). If you want to be sure a local retailer stocks the figures please let him know you plan to purchase them. You would be surprised how many retailers don’t think there are many Stargate fans out there interested in the figures.

How can I find out if the figures are going to be sold anywhere in my town?
Run into retailers and tell them you want them!

Will the action figures be available in Canada, or the U.S only?
We have wide distribution rights so it just needs a buyer in that country to order!

I live in Australia and have been increasing frustrated and disappointed at the lack of availability of Stargate products outside the U.S. and Canada. How do you intend to distribute this and/or future Stargate-themed toys in overseas countries such as Australia (provided there is a market for them, of course)?
See above — all I can say is DST wouldn’t turn sales away, so if you folks want figures in your country or town speak up to the retailers you frequent and tell them to order from Previews or their local distributor. That’s the only way they will know there is demand!

Miscellany

Will the action figures be able to assume positions such as kneeling without balance issues? After all they must do so before their god!
The SG-1 wave 1 figures cannot kneel.

Is there a timeframe for the Atlantis characters?
Nothing we can share at this point, but you won’t be waiting all ’07 … we promise!

Since we’re going to be getting a Serpent Guard, will we also be seeing Horus and Anubis Guards? With helmets?
We’ve tossed them around, but they are not on the schedule.

Are there any plans to make the newest villains, the Ori and the Priors?
We’ve tossed around the idea of the Priors so we’ll have to see what the future brings.

Does DST have the license to produce playsets for the Stargate line?
No.

I know this has been asked before, but just to clarify: Is there a chance in the near future to have scaled ships for the Stargate line? Like a 12-inch Prometheus and/or an 18-inch Daedalus with lights and sound like the Trek ships?
No plans at this time.

Someone said there are going to be 8″ figures, too. What’s real and what’s rumor?
News to me!

When can we expect to see package shots of the figures or the package art?
This is being written on May 24, so VERY SOON! Production is well underway.

When might we hear news about wave three? I’m disappointed that we are getting Thor before Apophis, General Hammond, or Bra’tac.
We’ll announce series 3 around the time series 1 gets into stores. (Why no love for Thor?)
