Hewlett to pen Starcrossed TV series

Stargate Atlantis co-star David Hewlett (“Rodney McKay”) has no shortage of things to keep him busy these days. The actor will write a new half-hour comedy series called Starcrossed for SCI FI Channel, the network announced today.

Here’s how SCI FI describes the series:

In the tradition of The Larry Sanders Show, Starcrossed, a high touch, high-tech comedy, obliterates the fourth wall with its behind-the-scenes antics. Throwing in a bitter dose of “Galaxy Quest” cynicism for good measure, David Hewlett (Stargate Atlantis) will draw on his own experiences to pen this quirky half-hour about life behind the camera at a long-running sci-fi space soap. Jane Loughman and John G. Lenic are serving as executive producers, with NBC Universal Television Studio on board as the production entity.

There could well be a connection between the show and Hewlett’s new independent film “A Dog’s Breakfast,” which also features a fictional sci-fi soap opera called Starcrossed.

Hewlett has also announced his recent engagement to Loughman, who also produced “A Dog’s Breakfast.” Congratulations, David and Jane!

Among SCI FI’s other new offerings for 2007 is:

  • SCI FI Drive-in, a new broadband destination for hard-to-find science fiction classics. The online feature will also include the Battlestar Galactica Video Maker Took Kit, a new user-generated content feature on SCI FI Pulse. Drive-in will launch on January 21 with a library of nearly 100 films.
  • Flash Gordon, a new 22-episode series produced in Canada and based on the classic comic strip. The new series is produced by Robert Halmi, Sr. and Robert Halmi, Jr., and will premiere in July.
  • Revolution, a new sci-fi series from CBS Paramount Network Television. The show tells the story of a U.S. space colony in the farthest reaches of the galaxy that finds itself under siege from its own homeworld — Earth.
  • Tin Man, a new sci-fi fantasy take on “The Wizard of Oz.” The mini-series will co-star Tony Award winning actor Alan Cumming, and is also produced the the Halmi’s RHI Entertainment. It will air in December on SCI FI.
