Continuum on Blu-ray, DVD July 29

Stargate: Continuum will see a Blu-ray release alongside the DVD when the movie arrives in North America on Tuesday, July 29, FOX Home Entertainment will announce today.

While we’ve had the official DVD release date for a few weeks now (story), this is the first official confirmation that Continuum will be the Stargate television franchise’s first leap to the next-generation, high-definition format. (The 1994 feature film is already on Blu-ray from Lion’s Gate.)

“We’ve got nuclear submarines, F-15’s and the bone fide Arctic Circle,” writer and producer Brad Wright said. “Add our fabulous cast, including Beau Bridges, William Devane, and Richard Dean Anderson, and you’ve got yourselves a movie.”

With a running time of 99 minutes, the disc will also include an audio commentary track by writer-producer Brad Wright and director Martin Wood, plus three bonus featurettes:

  • The Making of Stargate: Continuum
  • Stargate Goes to the Arctic
  • The Layman’s Guide to Time Travel

“Delving into the extraordinary making of Stargate: Continuum, the featurettes explore how the U.S. military provided assistance, such as a Navy nuclear submarine and F-15 fighter jets from the Air Force, what it was like shooting in the Arctic, and how science and science fiction collide,” FOX said in the press release.

The film is presented in widescreen format in English, French, and Spanish 5.1 Dolby Surround sound. Subtitles are available in English, French, and Spanish.

The DVD will run $26.98 ($37.98 in Canada), and the Blu-ray disc $39.98 ($49.98 in Canada).

Pre-ordering has begun at Amazon.com for the DVD edition, with a price tag of just $16.99 (U.S. – subject to change). (Click through from GateWorld and support this site with your purchase!) Blu-ray pre-orders should begin soon.

The Blu-ray edition will include the same list of special features. It will be authored in BD-Java with AVC (MPEG 4 compression) on a single-layer 25 GB disc with English 5.1 DTS HD Lossless Master Audio plus French 5.1 Dolby Digital and Spanish 5.1 Dolby Digital subtitles.

MGM and FOX are also hoping to get Stargate: Continuum into the Guinness Book of World Records, as the “Most Northerly Film Shoot.” A skeleton crew filmed for five days on an ice flow 200 miles north of Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, including the surfacing of the nuclear submarine U.S.S. Alexandria.

We hope to have the DVD / Blu-ray cover art soon, as well as the film’s 45-second trailer.
