GateWorld: I was always wondering if they were going to consider making the Millers the first family of Atlantis. She wouldn’t have to be in very episode. Zelenka and Rodney’s team is a big team. But bringing you in every few episodes or so, just letting us know that you are around, and then every once in a while making you a significant part of the story, I thought that would be a compelling direction to go in.
Kate Hewlett: Yeah, I wondered about that too, but I think it’s tricky once you have a child on [Atlantis] — like a character, a child character, because My God, the actress was the most mature, incredible person I’ve ever worked with. Seriously she’s going to be so famous.
I think once you bring a child onto the show it’s a bit strange somehow. I don’t know. That doesn’t always work. I wondered about that, too. I did wonder about that. Then it takes away the tension and the relationship between the McKays and all of that. If she’s there all the time …
GW: It would’ve made an interesting new dynamic out of it. But you’re right, you have to ask yourself, “OK, who’s going to school the kid? Is the Ancient computer going to school her?”
KH: And then does it become a movie of the week?
GW: Exactly. Well for better or for worse the series is terminated and it’s going to be in movies. Are you open to involvement in any of the movies?
KH: Oh God yeah. I’d love to be involved. I certainly haven’t heard anything, but I would love that. I’d be really fun to go back. Like I said it was a great final experience, too, so I’m happy, but if they do the movies and there’s anything for me I’d be all over it. As long as that David guy’s not in it. [Laughter]
GW: So Humans Anonymous is the big thing on your plate right now?
KH: Yep! www.FringeToronto.com. That’s all the information and ticket sales. It starts on January 8 and goes to the 18th.
GW: OK, great! You haven’t been blogging a whole lot!
KH: I know!
GW: I went and I saw cats in Apple boxes. I’m thinking, “Hmm!” And “tea strainers for brains.” Huh! I think the cat was sitting on the stove? Is she cooking the cat?
KH: He sits in the sink. It’s ridiculous. Every time I go to brush my teeth there’s a cat in the sink. He won’t leave until I turn the water on. It’s ridiculous. He loves it in there. It’s the perfect place. He overflows a little bit over the edges because he’s enormous, but he loves it in the sink.
They took turns getting in my MacBook Air case. That’s the other picture They both loved that.
GW: That’s adorable. How many do you have?
KH: Just two. I’m not “crazy lady” status yet. I think you have to have three to be an official “crazy cat lady.”
GW: Anything else that we should be on the lookout for?
KH: Yes! I wrote a short film that I’m going to be acting in with Michelle Giroux again and that is called “She Said Lenny.” We’re shooting in the end of January or beginning of February. And we’ve got Bravo!FACT funding for, it so that’s really exciting, and that means it’ll be on TV at some point.
So that’s next up. I’m really trying to have a fresh start because I was feeling like I needed a lot of change and instead of becoming a teacher I’m doing lots of things to start fresh and I’m pretty excited.
The moving is going to be great. I’m moving in with a roommate into a nice house. I’m looking for new representation.
GW: That’s why you left. Right.
KH: Yeah! Just lots of changes. It’s going to be fun. I recorded an album of five of my songs with a musician by the name of Chris Stanton. We actually sold at the convention in Germany which was a total blast.
I sold 23 copies of the CD so I’m excited. I just sold the songs themselves as files and I’m going to email them to people who bought them, but soon we’re going to have an actual packaged version of it and I’m going to see how that goes.
GW: Well good for you, girl! You sound awfully busy and things sound like they’re going in the right direction.
KH: I hope so, yeah.
GW: Are you happy?
KH: I’m doing well. [Laughter] Is that a good answer? It was a tough summer and I’m feeling great now. I’m feeling really excited about coming out of that. So yeah, I think I am.
