Savela hints at starship Destiny design

The exterior look of the Destiny is close to being final, GateWorld learned today in an exclusive interview with Stargate Universe Visual Effects Supervisor Mark Savela.

When fans will get an initial look at the craft is anyone’s guess, but the opinions are sooner rather than later. Until then, we can only imagine what shape it will take! Will the ship’s purpose and functionality play a greater role in the outer look, or will the team at Bridge Studios go with a design that simply looks cool?

“I think you have to go with a mix,” Savela told GateWorld. “It certainly lends itself as well to the exteriors, and the interiors have to match. It can’t look completely out of place or you give that away. You’ve got to have the exterior and interiors look the same.

“There is a certain functionality where you know where Brad and Robert are taking the series and what the ship does, and what it has to do, and what it’s going to do. There’s a lot of balance and juggling on what the ship looks like.”

If all goes according to plan, viewers will be staring at the Destiny for many years to come, so it makes sense to get it right.

“It will be a shape that fans will absolutely identify with,” Savela continued. “[That] was a real mandate going in. Creating a new ship that will be iconic — you hope — is a challenge. It’s harder than people think where you go, ‘Let’s create a new ship.’ The ship really has to stand out.”

“I was walking around the sets today with Andy Mikita, [going] ‘Wow, that’s amazing.’ They’ve got some incredible stuff in there.”

Let us hope we get a look at the Destiny before she appears on TV screens in Stargate Universe this fall! Stick with GateWorld for the complete interview with Universe Visual Effects Supervisor Mark Savela, coming soon!

  • Curiouser and curiouser. The more little snippets of info that come through the more excited I get at seeing "Stargate: Universe"! Keep that info coming GateWorld! I'm sure the look of the ship and its interior will be absolutely phenomenal! Can't wait to see them!

  • i'm gonna miss the asgard beaming technology.. so many uses unexplored, since the destiny is older then atlantis.

  • We don't know what is going to be expected. I have ALWAYS wondered something when it comes to matter transportation and the Ancients.

It's a known fact that the Ancients created the Ring Transporter (Which does boggle me as to why there were none seen in SGA), it's also a very known fact they they made the Stargates. What I am wondering is if they did in fact create a Site to site transport technology. Or did they rely on transporters that are seen in Atlantis? Meaning a Transporter was on a ship and it just "Beamed" from one transporter to an other.... Or did they have Asgard/Star Trek type transporters.....

  • While I know they are still banging out final details on Universe and the ship. I must admit that I have never been a fan of bits and pieces of information. I prefer getting it all at once... This bits and pieces idea annoys the everliving hell out of me to no end.

  • "It’s a known fact that the Ancients created the Ring Transporter (Which does boggle me as to why there were none seen in SGA)"

I was just wondering that myself. I was watching either 'Hide and Seek' or 'Hot Zone' of Season One. I thought I heard what sounded like a ring transporter, and had that thought. Weird...

  • With the transporter the Ancients created the general technology. You can beam from one platform in a nice little flash of white light to another platform in a nice little flash of white light. And you saw that all the time in Atlantis - the transporters. They just weren't shaped like rings. Also, the Ancients were the litterbugs (as Jack said :P) the Goa'uld were, so you didn't see *as* much (still quite a bit though) of their stuff just lyin' around like what happened with the rings.

And I generally agree about the bits and pieces of information, thus I don't do spoilers. But for just learning in general what the show is like, then this is certainly better than waiting for the "big dump", which would have to be when the show actually airs.

  • While there were no apparent rings on Atlantis that I can recall, the lift network in the city did feature transporters. Correct me if I'm remembering wrong, but when the crew tapped the map of Atlantis on the lift wall where there were transport sites in the city, they were beamed to that location. The lifts also went up and down... hehe

  • Yes... it does seem weird. But you must think that the rings were older than Atlantis so i guess they just made them obsolete so it didnt show up in the newer tech. IDK....

  • Is it bigger than a wraith hive ship or is it a small ship? Does it have automated defenses or has it just been lucky these past few several thousand years?

  • I'm guessing either a ring structure, Alpha formation, or variation on a certain unnamed ship from Atlantis.
