Tonight marks the first regular episode of Stargate Universe to follow the 3-part series premiere! Here’s an early look at “Darkness.”
Watch out for significant SPOILERS, particularly in Syfy’s full episode description …
From TV Guide:
When the Destiny‘s power reserves drop to a critical level, the crew is ordered to use power for essential services only, but the rationing isn’t enough to keep Rush from announcing that all on board will die within days.
From Syfy:
Dr. Nicholas Rush has been working throughout the night to try and determine why the ship’s power reserves are critically low. He reiterates his mounting concerns to Colonel Young, who advises the crew to limit their power consumption to essential services only. Suddenly the lights dim to emergency levels and everything but life support goes dead.
Overwhelmed by fatigue and frustration, Rush declares that all on board will perish within days. But when Destiny’s flight path towards a solar system reveals the existence of three planets, they hope that one of them is habitable.
Meanwhile Eli records individual messages from the crew in case they don’t survive.

After you’ve watched tonight’s episode, head over to GateWorld Forum to talk about it with 39,000 other fans!
Catch up on Stargate Universe with the 3-hour premiere, “Air,” now at Hulu.com (U.S. only) and on iTunes.
SGU airs at 9 p.m. (8 Central) on Syfy, and 10 p.m. Eastern on SPACE in Canada. “Darkness” will make its U.K. premiere next Tuesday on Sky1, and next Friday on SCI FI Australia.
I hope SGU is not going to be the same old predicatable…”disaster happens, ‘we’re all going to die’, oh we saved everyone at the last second” formula. That will get old very very quickly.
It seemed to be okay when McKay did it.
They said that the only system that still worked after the blackout was life support. I guess they just take artificial gravity for granted.
Real World confessionals, a gratuitous shower scene, and peeping in on a chick with huge boobies! This show is really setting the bar for intelligent science fiction!
Not watching, shakey cam makes me sick. I’d give two minutes of McKay to the 4 episodes aired so far.
Big hope for this show as I really like the actors and characters right off the bat. However, I hope they don’t have to go to the one big bad enemy thing. A few concerns – All this personel is supposed to be highly trained military and scientists who were on another planet and they all get freaked out so quick? The communication stones are going to be a problem because I am wondering why Sam and or Mckay are not switching with the cook and solving the problems on the ship. Or maybe thats how they will get it… Read more »
LOL!The “huge boobies” seem to be one of the most commented on aspects of the episode!
(here and on SyFy)
ANOTHER awesome show. I don’t really understand the people who don’t like the ‘shaky’ cam. It doesn’t seem that shaky to me. Rush’s breakdown just looks like a typical day at the office to me. They HAVE to get rid of Chloe. She is a waste and just not cute enough to justify it. I still have problems with the body swapping presentation. If Telford’s body shows up as host to Young’s soul (or whatever) I doubt that Young’s wife would believe Young was inhabiting it. And quite doubtful she would kick out Lou Diamond Philips. They need to do… Read more »
Great special effects…which is about the only redeeming feature this show’s got going for it imo. Everybody should take turns using those NEXTEL PTT rocks instead of a video to their loved ones. It’s feeling more and more like BSG. Being on board a broken ship, hurtling aimlessy in space, owned previously by aliens that just got tired of it and shed their human forms…so the old saying is true…”One alien’s garbage is another human’s treasure”..lol!I seriously don’t envision a lot of seasons in this show’s future. This type of plot is better suited as a 2hour movie rather than… Read more »
Yep huge boobies was the highlight.
Ah and everyone who recorded there Goodbys must have done them in a other universe/time because the lights in the floors were allways on in the back….
But iam just a SciFi fan…
@fishfarmr, you’re right. You’d think given the circumstances they said someone back with experience (Sam or McKay, etc.) to lend them a hand. Seems ridiculous that they wouldn’t.
SGU is less exciting than Defying Gravity and we all know what happened there. I found myself walking away from the TV several times as my attention just drifted away. What a shame.
@ arnoldrimmer: No the light wasn’t on in all of the recorded goodbyes. The scientist that got kicked out by Rush did his in total darkness. At least follow the show if you’re going to complain. And for the rest of you complainers, why are you still watching the show and then complaining about it here??? It’s been four episodes, if you still don’t think it’s good just stop watching. Or at least stop your whining! I’m pretty sure the pace will pick up as soon as the show characters have been established. Considering some future episodes titles the pace… Read more »
@Nikst I bet you liked DS9 … but hated Enterprise am I right?
For DS9 you did not ned a Brain for Enterprise Season 1-2 and 4 you needed on if you knew the Startrek History…
pretty predictable and boring episode..thats 4 underwhelming episodes in a row. And yawn I knew they were gonna be heading for that star *groan*.
Oh well, ill keep watching..its still VERY early days yet, and so far its at least watchable in comparison to Asslantis. I hope it gets better than this dull soap-drama/survival crap though, I want to see planets and well..the fracking universe and interesting and weird aliens.
Where do we get the ratings for last night’s show? I noticed that when a site lists a poll, it usually shows that SGU was rated as an ‘excellent’ but the comments are all negative. Why is that?
This weeks episode was lot better than air part 3. I hope that Elliot hooks up with chloe. I’m slightly tired of the main chick being paired with the soldier dude
This was just a big Boobs episode and that do we geat daily in cmomercials after 19:00 in free TV…
who cares about nippels and Boobs anymore accept USA ?
This is bloody unbelievable! Another episode with 0 action? I mean people’s actions. Apart from taking showers, collapsing from lack of sleep and using service resources to settle personal problems and waiting to die helplessly and getting all nervous on each other. And this lack of story isn’t even OVER in 45 minutes? Crap. And I mean it. Only a blind can’t see so far that everything that made Stargate a worthy scifi show – heroes, deeds, science stuff – is gone. Crappy crap. Did I already said that? And yes, usually I keep my mouth shut when there is… Read more »
@WillKatt have you considered not watching?
I don’t understand comments like: SGU sucks but I will keep watching. Why the hell would you continue watching somthing if you don’t like it?
@arnoldrimmer: Actually, I haven’t watched DS9 or Enterprise. I have watched most of New Generation and a little bit of the original and I think New Generation is waaay better. So my advice to you is, don’t bet with money, because, well you suck at it. And you talk about brains, but you clearly don’t pay attention during the episode and then complain about something that didn’t happen and now you call me stupid?
oops. I meant The Next Generation
its not THAT hard to understand why people are still watching. It’s plain obvious actually. Here let me explain. ITS ONLY FOUR EPISODES DOWN. Most shows take a whole season before they find their ground and do anything worthwhile at all, its very VERY rare a show gets it right on its first season. Thats why people continue to watch it – especially if its a spinoff from something else they care about. Personally I havent liked the first 4 eps, but I see massive potential, and at the least I’m a fan of Robert Carlyle, and its not as… Read more »
@AbstractAlien its just that some people have already made there mind up about SGU and keep saying that it sucks and trying to pick up on any fault they can find wrong with it.
Those are the kind of people I don’t understand why there still watching.
I don’t understand why you’re complaining about the complainers in every thread here.
See what I did there?
@Imitation Tofu: hahaha, your intelligent logic on the likes of Tanith and that other guy who’s name sounds like Knickers. They’re moles that were planted here to sing praises whatever the shows might be. As I keep asking and no one replies, where are they getting the Nielsen Ratings from. Are we just taking the “word’ from the channel execs or are they really published somewhere on the Internet? I’ve looked at the Nielsen, Zap2it, and tv-by-the- numbers sites, and I am yet to see SGU mentioned anywhere on those sites.
meant to say “wasted on the likes”
@US06154: Good argument there “I don’t like SGU, so the ratings can’t be that good, they MUST BE LYING!”
@Imitation Tofu: That really isn’t the same thing now is it? That’s a really dumb argument, I’ve seen that one used in a hundred different boards and usually it is used by complainers who don’t have any good arguments for the amount of complaining they are doing. The complainers should stop watching the show and nitpicking it here on Gateworld if they don’t like it, the show won’t change for them, so why bother complaining?
It’s fine if you don’t like a particular episode and you then say what you didn’t like about it. But the same people are complaining every time and they use the EXACT same arguments. THAT’S what annoys me. And the fact that they say the exact same thing shows that they don’t like the show at all, not just one episode, hence they should stop watching
@Scott Watson,
gatcha, well that I can understand – appreciate you clarifying! allthough IMO its still their perogative really, best to ignore them if their posts irritate you that much IMO.
hell, the pilot is really just one episode so in a way we’ve only had two stories…very very little to go on so far. I think itll take at least another 10 before they learn what works/doesnt work yet.
@Imitation Tofu if the complainers would kindly bugger off then I would much rather talk about things that happen in the episodes themselves.
Seriously are we going to get people crying that Atlantis has been cancelled and saying that SGU sucks in every single new article this season?
We know that you don’t like SGU but quite frankly we don’t care so please leave.
Go start a SaveAtlantis petition website or something.
arnoldrimmer, you must have at least some taste, cuz’ Red Dwarf was an awesome show, but come on, Enterprise? Berman and Bragga did everything on that series that you say Universe is doing now, i.e., pandering to the lowest common denominator. The decontamination room on the Enterprise was nothing more than a cheap excuse for the main characters to strip to their underwear and rub oil on each other! However, your references to Enterprise and DS9 seem to speak volumes about your reactions to Universe. Of all the Star Trek series, Deep Space Nine (my personal favorite) was very much… Read more »
I leave long posts, so I apologize if I annoy. Here’s what I like about Universe: A cast of characters with heroic qualities as well as human failings. In the last episode especially, Eli’s recording allowed a glimpse of the very different hopes, fears, and motivations of a diverse group of people. Rush and Young in particular strike me as thoughtfully created characters. Although nominally on the same side, an antagonistic paradigm has been set up. There is the obvious tension of the chief scientist butting heads with the ranking military officer. More personally, Rush had already lost what he… Read more »
@Nikst: forgot to add, so in the same argumant as yours, If MGM and Syfylis is telling us the show is doing Phenominally (and them being impartial and all, with noyhing to lose) they MUST be telling the truth. /sarcasm..
@US06154: You really don’t have any better arguments have you? I never said that the numbers were true or false. But the fact that you say “the show sucks, the ratings must be a lie” is pathetic. Why would anybody else report the numbers when the records that are set are records on Syfy and the Canadian and British counterparts? And I don’t need MGM or Syfy to tell me that a ratings increase is a sign of the show doing well, that’s just common sense.
@US06154: Not sure if this is what u asked for but here: link
@Scott Watson Rick Berman and Brannon Bragga destroyed Season 3 of Enterprise and Star Trek 10, I left bevor it was finished and I am a hardcore Trekki, But I loved the new 2009 Star Trek, Every Bragga Story was bad in TNG accept “Cause and Effect”. But lets see, how Flash Forward turnes out , Braggas new series I Saw the Pilot and was thinking the same as I think about SGU : It cant get more than on Season…
@arnoldrimmer Flash Forward has been successful with a lot of people thus far and there are even claims for it becoming a replacement for Lost (Which has also been a big hit).
SGU also has been a successful with a lot of people and does not have a issues with ratings (which are even increasing) regardless of the poor timeslot its in and the efforts of a minority who are doing whatever they can to bash it and discourage others from watching.
@Scott Watson, Really, what’s your connection with the Franchise? Are you on the Payroll of MGM or SyFY? you seem to be drawn into every comment to defend the Interests of SGU. Think it’s time you did some “buggering Off” yourself.
@US06154 I’m just a fan defending a show that I like on a site ‘dedicated to fans’. This is a fan site so what are non fans doing here? Comments bashing SGU (Especially those like yourself who seem to do it every chance you get) do nothing but arrogate those who do like it. All I wish is that they those people would kindly leave or avoid SGU articles so that us fans can talk about the show we like which I believe is what this site was originally intended for. I would much rather be talking about things that… Read more »
Meant aggravate instead of “arrogate” in my last reply.
Also I did not mean to sound like I was insulting Gateworld only wanted to imply that those at MGM and SyFy would be to busy with what they do day to day to come on and check out the comments in Gateworld articles.
@Scott Watson: Gateworld does not exclusively cater to SGU. SGU is only the Current Entree.
Have you read this article? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GateWorld#GateWorld
In it it Joe Malozzi States “I have always been a supporter of Gateworld and consider it the premiere site for Stargate fans online. In fact, I was the one who suggested to MGM Marketing several years back, that they look toward establishing some sort of working relationship with Darren and GateWorld.”
—Joseph Mallozzi’s, weblog[19]
Well, smoke that for a change, instead of whatever you are high on.
“SyFy would be to busy with what they do day to day to come on and check out the comments in Gateworld articles”
Suuure, Has anyone followed Craig Engler, Senior Vice President of SyFY on Twitter? They’ll be able to tell how busy he is (Twittering, that is :)

I just saw the 11/20/09 episode. I keep hoping it will get better, after all Babylon5 started off slow, but it developed into the best science fiction program ever. It had a extremely powerful story line, with strong characters, but the STORY LINE dominated the program. In SGU the story line took maybe 6 minutes of the episode; the remainder was characters refusing to reveal the story. Maybe 35 minutes was devoted to who’s have sex with whom, who fathered a baby, who’s sleeping with my wife. That’s the definition of a SOAP-OPERA! We want the program to succeed, and support… Read more »
