For Cryin’ Out Loud! GateWorld’s New Friday Column

Off and on over the course of GateWorld’s 10 years on the Internet, we’ve experimented with editor blogs, columns, weekly news briefings, and other ways to give you and us a chance to just talk.  Our news coverage is meant to be more traditional (read: formal) than most of the blog-style science fiction coverage available online today, but the result is that we’ve had  a hard time finding places to kick back and be ourselves.

Now, of course, David and I have our weekly podcast. That’s huge fun, but also takes you an hour to get through each week.  Only a small portion of GateWorld readers are also regular show listeners.  So in an attempt to shoot the breeze with the rest of you, let you know what is on our minds and what we are working on behind the scenes, this week we’re kicking off an experimental new Friday column.

It’ll be sometimes silly, sometimes serious, sometimes about site updates and secret projects, and sometimes just give you a chance to tell us what you think of the current state of Stargate and the job we are doing.

I’m not entirely sold on our inaugural title, “For Cryin’ Out Loud!” — though it does show that there is plenty of room for us all to be occasionally exasperated in these Friday sessions.  Give us a shout if you can come up with something better!

One thing we gave up doing a few years ago (for lack of time, not desire) was our Letters to the Editor section.  You long-time GateWorlders might remember it, including some entertaining opinions and once even a reply letter from a Stargate producer.  We still get interesting mail and some good questions.  So we’re inviting you — not just this week, but on an on-going basis — to write in and tell us what you are thinking, make a suggestion, and/or ask us a question.  Please let us know if your message is a Letter to the Editor or otherwise meant for Friday’s column.  Otherwise, if we think you might want your question private, we’ll keep your message just between the two of us.

So, think of Friday’s column as a place for us to write about Stargate and GateWorld goings-on a little less formally, and for you to ask questions and share opinions.

We have some ideas for what to talk about in the coming weeks, but first we want to hear from you!  If there’s something you have always wondered about the site (“Why don’t you post news more often?”), something that irks you (“Why do you allow such negative comments?”), or something about SG-1, SGA or SGU that has been puzzling you (“Why do you keep saying that Destiny is ‘hundreds of thousands of years old,’ when it is clearly millions of years old?”) — here’s your chance.

We can’t wait to start the conversation!

  • What's your favorite on-going subplot from SG-1, SGA and/or SGU? What things do you wish had been explored more in Stargate (certain technology? certain character? missed opportunities for character development?)?

  • Well not a topic to talk about, but any chance you will get round to fixing your VOTE section? At the moment every time i try to put in a vote it come up with this "Internal Server Error"
    Dread

  • What open story lines in SG-1 or SGA would you like to see resolved? What about learning more of the Furlings or what happened to Daniel's grandfather?

Any ideas for new story arcs?

How about any disappointments? - Such as O'neill not being included in the series finale and seeing how things would have played out between him and Carter.

  • I really enjoy the podcasts. Please keep up the great work. I'd really like to hear a podcast on the comparision of Babylon 5 vs. Stargate in general.

In my opinion, J. Michael Straczynski, is a genius. JJ Abrams is just trying to mimic what he did. He had the plan from the beginning on a tale that truly showed the best of science fiction. He had actual character development and depth, where he showed the good and bad of each character.

This is what excites about SGU, they are showing true character development, where they are flawed and still rise to the occasion. Now we need to mix in the action, the fans are vested in the characters, let's do something with it.

  • I would like to know your take on the issue of the SG1/SGA movies. Sources say that MGM is out of money or running out of money, yet we get such deep thought provoking fair as "Hot Tub Time Machine"....

  • What is going on with the Stargate Movies? I know about all the financial trouble.....but give us some more details on when Brad Wright thinks they will start filming....?
