Here’s your preview of “The Greater Good!” As usual, beware of some spoilers …
From Syfy:
Destiny comes upon a heavily damaged ship floating in space. Dr. Rush suggests that the alien vessel be explored in the hopes of salvaging any worthwhile data or technology. Without a shuttle, Rush and Col. Young must make a dangerous space-suited expedition to the derelict ship. Once safely aboard, they discover that the ship contains empty pods similar to those they encountered on the seed ship.
As Dr. Rush gets the life support and power running, the ship’s engines suddenly engage, propelling it away from Destiny. With the power now depleted the ships drift helplessly apart.
From Sky1:
The Destiny is left stranded in space after an encounter with a damaged ship. While Young goes into panic mode, Rush refuses to divulge a valuable secret.

I dont want this show to end its sooo good :D Hopefully the ratings will pick up this ep it seems really good!!!
Yes it would be such a shame if it ended.I think the last two eps were amazing and from what I’ve read about this evening’s one..this is it folks, that’s what we all have been waiting for!It was worth a wait and for those who’ve stuck with the show and waited,it’s been more than worthed,I’d say! We’re getting a huge pay off! That plus the slower character development and their interactions and the story build up,have only made us more invested, involved with it,which now makes the viewing experience that much more exciting!! At least that’s what I think and how I feel! I… Read more »
I hope the ratings go up! Season 1 wasn’t that good until the very end but season 2 has really taken off & it’s a shame that people would miss out because they’re still thinking what they saw in season 1.
Well what most people don’t understand is they have to figure out how the ship works and lay down the ground rules of the Destiny and such. People act like it should be action all the time from the beginning. I personally like how they are slowly figuring stuff out. It’s more enjoyable. People act like they wanted them to figure stuff out the first episode. Hey we’re on a million year old ancient space ship and we’ve figured out how to control it and work it in one day unrealistic. It’s a more realistic show and it has human… Read more »
Some fans on Twitter are working to get SGU to trend on Twitter tonight, it’s all being run out of the @SGUawareness account
@syfygyrl Yeah exactly!Remember after season 8 of SG-1,Whan O’Neill had left, people were like complaining about that and about someone else taking his place and how come Sam wasn’t the new SG-1 team leader, but I was just happy that Stargate SG-1 was still on the air, plus those last two seasons turned out to be quite amazing if you ask me!It was diferrent, the show had changed quite a bit..there was a new vibe,a completely new story,a new kick ass bad guys and new main characters.Yet it was still stargate havily connected to mythology, still fun and humourous and advantureous,exciting..Ben Browder and Claudia Black… Read more »
This is going to be great! Go, go SGU!
Hey everybody (new on the site) I’m from The Netherlands and love SGU but i cant see it because i dont have SyFy and SGU in not yet on TV here.
sorry i cant support the ratings.
Ow… and i will buy SGU ofcourse… on blu-ray.
THE MISSION! THE MISSION!
ohhh my have I been waiting for this! Season 2 has been fantastic!
I’ve been looking forward to this episode. Hopefully the true mission of the Destiny will turn out to be something profound.
I am in the “SGU is probably getting cancelled” camp of belief.
HOWEVER, if there is one episode this season which has the promise, and chance, to bring people back to the show, this sounds like it, so I hope it doesn’t disappoint.
Looks like all is love as usual. How about holding the ratings discussions until the article appears tomorrow?
This is just hoping for a good ratings, cause this sounds as probably the most important ep.thus far!
“The Universe… the Final Frontier. These are the continuing voyages of the Ancient vessel Destiny. Her ongoing mission: to (joke about sex goes here), to piss off new life forms and new civilizations, to boldly go where Star Trek: Voyager has already gone before!”
I’m kidding, I actually like SGU, heh.
@michael Sacal LOL!!
Great episode, next weeks looks like it could be one of the best.
they are killing off Ginn(Julie McNiven). noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Finally, after a year and a half, we get an episode worth watching. To bad this episode didn’t take place about 15 episodes ago.
Folks, sorry to break the ice, but SGU will still probably go the way of the Caprica (dodo) before it finishes it’s full season. Don’t say I didn’t tell ya so.
I am so sick of all the “SGU will probably get cancelled” talk. It’s really annoying and it doesn’t accomplish anything at all. No one can say whether it will or not, so how about lets try to be more positive? Personally I believe SyFy has enough invested in it that they will be willing to give it more time to find its audience, but its all still just speculation.
I think I can say that it WON’T be cancelled. What would they replace it with? Syfy would be shooting themselves in the foot.
best episode yet by far just what i wanted action anf real epic discovery i cant wait to see whats to come. but wish eli got to keep the hot redhead
Terrific episode… Now I’m angry… I’m angry that it took SGU this long to develop a story arc that I ACTUALLY CARE ABOUT! And now the ratings are tanking and the show is probably going to be axed… Seriously, where was this 10-15 episodes ago? Why string us along? What the hell?!?!
@Evilslayer – Clearly they’d replace it with more wrestling. I mean that is science fiction. Well, fantasy in any case…
Here’s hoping SGU succeeds in its mission and gets renewed for another season! Love the show!
3 statements/words for tonite’s episode: Wow, About Time, You Kidding Me Right? Wow we now see the effect of some of Rush’s decisions: Riley dead cause of his messing with Destiny jumping in and out of FTL, loss of the most available expert on Ancient stuff cause he wanted to be Captain Ahab, Cap. Kirk and Einstein at the same time. Rush not wanting to trust Young, Eli, or anyone else just goes to show the mind of a man with nothing to return to Earth with plus willing over the last year and a half to allow the death… Read more »
Now that was *kin’ awesome! :)
Alright…saw the episode. And…we’re making progress. I find myself kind of mystified at how this Simeon guy is capable of roaming the ship pissing people off. And the whole opening the door to someone’s private quarters just by hitting a button? Guess the Ancients weren’t sticklers for privacy huh? The thing with Rush saving Young’s life was good though. They’re trying to build some common ground there. Getting Young and Rush into more of an O’Neill/Jackson dynamic. The beginnings of trust and all that. If the next ep preview is what it appears to be, I think they jumped the… Read more »
I liked this, this episode was really solid. I don’t think it should’ve taken a whole season to before the bridge of the ship was found, preferably Rush coulda found this out in Season 1, and Season 2 could’ve been stuff after the bridge was found out IMHO. The show was too slow getting where it’s going, now we’re somewhere.
And the Trekkie in me, loved seeing the “Captain” walk around the bridge, hear that there’s interesting planets, and say to go take a look. ;)
This was a good episode until the end…and then they completely blew it. This was the swan song in my eyes. I don’t see the show recovering after this. The levels they will go to in order to force excessive drama is just too high for the show to possibly make it. And it’s a shame because they’re ruining a great story idea.
Great story idea, I feel sorry for Ginn. :S
@mythos With emotions they are not ruining anything. The show is just simply slower than the other SGshows. Here you go! Now the people on the ship have a goal! Finally they are moving forward. Expolring whatever planet they want. They control Destiny (and of course it controls them!) Story goes on more quickly! This episode was great! Was the best! SGU will recover! It WILL get the renewal for season 3!
Bcause if it goes on like this episode, it will deserve it!
The part I loved the most … the Universe was intelligently created ;-) For so many years, I felt this is where the writers were going. They wove it into the fabric Stargate mythology. Got a lump in my throat and gasped however just as the episode ended ;-( When are they ever going to find the sickbay??? Maybe there’s something better onboard. Another idea, what if the ancients had an alternative to a transporter system? It’s a matter of time before they find it I guess.
Alien ship: Rush pilots the Destiny over to a ship and suggests going over to it for no reason other than “Destiny brought us here”, ie Rush brought them there yet when they get over there he has no interest in the ship what so ever. Given Rush’s past the fact that he wasn’t looking through the ships systems, or telling Young to go look for something specific just tells me the writers used the ship as just a reason to get it out in the open that Rush controlled Destiny and nothing else. Space suits draw power: What. No… Read more »
Finally SGU is how it has to be. This episode is best for me personally. What a nice job by all SGU crew, good writing, acting etc! Season 1 overal was so much drama less scifi and now they came back and showing stargate stuff! Now i just want this to continue for the first time to be honest :P
@TheGreer
That’s all well and good except for the fact that they failed to make the characters likeable in season 1 and didn’t use the slow pace effectively. It’s only been more recently that the writers have actually shown us how exactly the ship works and have found a sense of direction instead of stumbling around in the dark.
Not that exciting. Better, but not where it needs to be to develop a loyal fan base and to survive. I give it a 7.
To those of you, who think there is no competition? Think again. There is tons of competition out there. Some of it is already on air, case in point “The Walking Dead” on AMC. The premier of “The Walking Dead” captured 5.3 million viewers, and 3.6 million viewers for the 18-49 age range. To put this into perspective, this is the highest premier for any cable television series in 2010. Further, the SGU season 1 premier only generated 2.3 million viewers, and the SGU season 2 premier generated 1.175 million viewers. At this point SGU is struggling to pull in… Read more »
1) Show some of your characters “sucking it up” and being useful instead of lying and stabbing each other in the back every chance they get. Everyone is either a self-righteous manipulator, totally one-dimensionl, or completely undeveloped and for the most part useless. 2) Get a plan for where the show is going. There is one simple reason we had to wait this long to find out the most basic elements of what Destiny was doing: The writers had NO IDEA. The countdown thing has never made any sense, it makes less now. In fact, stopping anywhere but a star… Read more »
@dendu – It’s not the emotions ruining it, it’s the extent that the show will go to in order to force bad things happening. Anyone whom saw this episode knows what happened at the end and what next week’s episode will be about. Eli was one of the few likable characters whom wasn’t constantly in a bout of self-doubt and whining and they’re going to take that away. And it’s not just that they’re doing that, it’s how they’re letting it happen. In a completely and obviously unlikely way.
The thing with Simeon being able to slip guards and do what he’s presumably done is bull..otherwise the ep was great,I don’t understand what some of you are complaining about?
The fact that te Ancients had send a mission to explore what seems to be an intelligente structure within the background radiation of a big bang, that is the beginning of space and time seems noth worthy of exploring to you? Really!?
The only thing I find a bit unclear and if anyone remembers this, please remind me. As much as I remember,at the beginning of their whole ordeal, they’d said, they was billions of light years from Earth. Now what does that exactly mean..billions of light years..how much exactly?Becasue it’s very important. The known space all the way back to the big bang reaches 13.7 billion ly. So at the beginning of the show, they didn’t say;we’re over ten billon ly away from home, they’ve just say billions. That could mean anything..but logically it could be presumed less than ten.And it took Destiny milions of years to travel… Read more »
@Jim – The thing with Simeon being able to slip guards is huge. It’s massively forced. As for the rest, it makes perfect sense why the Ancients would be exploring it but it doesn’t seem like enough to make the characters that they ‘developed’ lose interest in trying to get back home and want to continue the mission instead. As far as the universe, I’m assuming you’re thinking of things in terms of the maximum distance that Destiny would need to travel would be the distance from the farthest point to the center. But that’s not accurate and it’s not… Read more »
My problem with the idea that Destiny is trying to discover how the universe was made isn’t the premise itself but that rather the ship itself. Something of that importance being left up to a ship (and seed ships) that were made when Star Gates could only connect to other gates in range strikes me as nonsensical. Even before the Ancients fell in the Peg Galaxy they at least had intergalactic drives and city ships that were dabbling in worm hole drive and we are expected to believe that there was no instance where someone went “hey, remember that ship… Read more »
@ Chief YYZ
SGU is planned till the Finale Episode in Season 5. The Writers have enough Ideas for the Story.
@wganubis – The distance between Stargates that can connect to each other is limited only by the amount of power available to it. This has been well-established. So I’m not sure where your idea that they could only work within a given galaxy came from? They could dial Atlantis from Earth with a ZPM. They could dial to Destiny from a planet with enough power that could be drawn from the elements on the planet available to it. Is it because of the times where they said gates would be out of range? That’s only relevant to the typical amount… Read more »
@ mythos you talk about the newer gates. The SGU Gates are the Prototype Version.
@mythos – I suppose making judgments like I did isn’t the best course given that we don’t know all the facts and given the fact the Ancients, like Jack once put it when referring to the Ghoul’d, are “damn litter bugs” it really wouldn’t surprise me if they indeed found what they were looking for and just decided to leave their equipment laying around for others to find.
@altera – I don’t think so. The concept behind the functionality of how the gates work wouldn’t really change from one incarnation to another. The differences would really only be aesthetic and in how the gates interacted with the DHD. Also, prototypes aren’t mass-produced as the gates being put in place by the seed ships are. They were production models, if you want to think of them in such terms. It’s true that you might not be able to dial an older gate in a typical way to achieve a lock to a given endpoint, but it could still be… Read more »
@mythos I didn’t mean traversing the distance from the farthest point in the universe to it’s center, but in a way exactly the opposite..travelling to the furthest reaches of the universe, because that’s where the big bang radiation is coming from..due to universe expanding. So that was kinda my point, just like you’d said..it’d take too much time. That’s why I mentioned some outside influence helping them or some other way the’ll come up to deal with that as you suggest. But regarding their position on the ship..as far as they know at this moment,it doesn’t make any difference to them whether they continue with… Read more »
@Jim – I see where you’re coming from, but the background radiation doesn’t actually come from the edge of the universe. It’s everywhere. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmic_microwave_background_radiation for more info) If it did come from the edge of the universe, we wouldn’t know about it as we have no present means to observe anything anywhere near that far out. So either endpoint would likely have limited value and wouldn’t be, in and of itself, the total goal. So they would likely just be flying an epically scaled search pattern, scanning as they went along. We also don’t know if Destiny has ever been… Read more »
@mythos LOL Thanks man for the info..I didn’t mean to actally take up so much of your time and I may have expressed myself poorly..I know the radiation in question is everywhere left in the wake of expanding universe..I merely wanted to say it’s oldest in the farthest reaches of the universe, cause those molecules, radiation and what not are the first one created after the bang. And Destiny clearly has a certain destination to get to,it doesn’t travel blindly! Now all of your points are completely valid and I really laughed, because, just as in your case this “simple”discussion has become a really good… Read more »
