Former Stargate Atlantis cast member Jason Momoa is headed for the big screen next summer! Now Box Office Mojo reports (via Cinema Blend) that Lionsgate has changed Conan‘s title.
The new title is Conan the Barbarian — perhaps to make it more clear that it is a remake of the 1982 Arnold Schwarzenegger fantasy movie, and not a big-screen adaptation of TBS’s newest late night talk show!
Conan the Barbarian opens August 19, 2011. It also stars Stephen Lang, Rachel Nichols, Ron Perlman, and Rose McGowan.
Cool … but it would be so much cooler to go back to the Robert E Howard sources and call it Conan the Cimmerian.
A big-screen adaptation of TBS’s newest late night talk show? I’d watch it.
It is a remake? I was really hoping for an actual adaptation of the Robert E. Howard work rather than that joke we got with Arnold. Wait a minute…
They cold have atleast got an actual ‘Big name’ to play this part, no disrespect to Jason, but he’s hardly a world class actor is he, I see this completing tanking at the box office.
@xandder i dont agree with you on this. Jason is the perfect fit for this role and his chance to stardom. its about time hollywood hires a fresh new face instead of the same old recycled names. even though jason is known for other work it is nice to see him on the big screen. ill be there watching the movie and support jason.
opps i ment supporting, sorry for the typo!
@xandder, Jason actually is quite a good actor. I can see how you might be saying that based on some of the SGA scenes but if you had scene any of his other work you would not say that. Blame some of the writing in SGA if anything, not the acting.
I agree that a better title would be Conan the Cimmerian as by calling it Conan the Barbarian, it most definitely sounds like a remake of the first Arnold Conan pic (which I thought was – despite above comments – pretty good, Unfortunately, the second Arnold/Conan pic was absolutely terrible – in my opinion).
who cares what it’s called! Look at that photo!
nom nom nom
@xandder: riiiiight, because only established actors should ever be in movies. Newcomers have never made it big off their first movie ever … have they? /s
that’s one I’m eagerly looking forward to. Jason is a very good actor, better than some who get praised to high heaven here, and I am sure he will draw plenty to the movie!
Coincidentally, when I record Conan (O’Brien) on my MythTV PVR, it picks that photo as the background when I select Conan’s show.
Wish someone would make a film actually true to Robert E Howards writing. And preferably one of the more lovecraftian stories he did…probably too “actually good” to happen though.
Screw the words, look at the picture!!! nom nom nom … … my wife came over and wondered why I was drooling … nom nom nom
‘Nom nom nom’ thirded ^___^
Jason is possibly the most gorgeous man alive.
@brindy Yes, that would be brill, but remember that you’re talking about a franchised organization making a fantasy film: When are they ever loyal to source material? If Conan is wearing Reebok sneakers a spraying on a bottle of Tag halfway through the film, or downing Gatorade and sweating purple, I wont be shocked. Just tie me to the ‘tree of woe’ and get it over-with… Wasn’t there supposed to be an animated Conan film a couple years back; Conan and the Temple of something-or-other? I remember it mentioned, a few trails, then nothing. Dead silence, like GB3, it died… Read more »
I am so waiting this movie. The man is gorgeous. I can´t wait to see him holding his sword. :D
