Stargate Universe actor Robert Carlyle is sticking with television after his two-year gig on the Destiny. He’s landed a new gig on ABC. Carlyle has been cast in the fantasy pilot Once Upon a Time for ABC, according to Deadline.com.
Carlyle made the switch from feature films to television for the third Stargate series, on which he plays Dr. Nicholas Rush. The final episodes are now airing Monday nights on Syfy Channel.
Once Upon a Time is a drama about “about a woman drawn into a town where the magic and mystery of fairy tales may be real and hold the key to unlocking the mysteries of her troubled past.” Carlyle will play Rumplestiltskin, an expert on black magic who “agrees to help Snow White and Prince Charming counteract the Evil Queen’s dark spells, but for a price.”
Ginnifer Goodwin (Big Love) will star as Snow White, and Mark Mylod (Entourage) is directing.
The pilot is written and produced by former LOST scribes Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz. The duo also wrote Tron: Legacy. LOST‘s Damon Lindelof is also on board as a consultant. We’ll know if the pilot gets picked up to go to series by May, when the networks hold their upfront presentations announcing the schedules for next fall.
This just sounds like Eureka but in a different setting. Why must they insist on using familiar stories and fairy tales. Sure it was funny in Shrek, but this is just pathetic. How about originality?
Hm, this is the fourth project I’ve seen RC’s name attached to in a month. The three previous projects “Paying for It”, “Dogs of Law”, and something about shipbuilding on the Clyde were all British. Is deadline.com a reliable news source?
I choose to be optimistic about “Once Upon a Time” if it gets picked up. Fairy tales can be a terrific source for stories. I highly recommend Bill Willlingham’s “Fables” comic series. Now that would make a great show!
I wish they would use a different picture of Robert. He just seems to “not give a damn” in this one.
Which makes me not give a damn either…
I’ve yet to hear his opinion on the cancellation.
Yeah, I look at the pilot list of SF/Fantasy shows for the next season, aside from Blood and Chrome, it ALL LOOKS THE SAME! I sincerely hope that Chuck and Fringe get renewed because there is like nothing that interests me aside from Blood and Chrome starting next year.
I think I prefer the plots of “Poe”, “Grimm” and “17th Precint”. I love urban fantasy, but with a procedural twist, so “Once Upon a Time” just doesn’t seem all that interesting to me.
good for RC. he is a great actor but unfortunately this just means nothing good for any future SGU
9 more EPS of SGU and no reason to even have the SyFy channle…at least RC is smart and looking for a different network for future work..
I hope he gets to yell at people. I like seeing Robert Carlyle yell at people.
@Browncoat1984: Check out ‘Game of Thrones’, it’s got Jason Momoa in it too. Looks pretty promising.
i actually think rumplestiltskin is perfect for carlyle!
I watched a Bond film yesterday with him as the ‘baddie’ and he had a shaved head, he worked that shaved head well!
