Report: MGM considering public ownership

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Inc. executives are exploring taking the historic studio public, Deadline reports.

Though the studio that owns the Stargate franchise isn’t talking publicly about the move, it has reportedly included language in a press release stating that it has “submitted a draft registration statement on a confidential basis” to the SEC for “a possible initial public offering of its Class A common stock.”

The studio is presently owned by a collection of private shareholders, the largest of whom of is billionaire financier Carl Icahn. It emerged from bankruptcy restructuring at the end of 2010, and ended 2011 with a net income of $37.8 million, according to Deadline.

Its current film projects include The Hobbit (co-financed with New Line) and G.I. Joe: Retaliation (co-financed with Viacom/Paramount).

MGM also owns the James Bond franchise as well as Rocky, The Pink Panther, and a film library of more than 4,000 classic titles — one of the largest in the world. It has its own home entertainment distribution arm, as well as film-making units MGM Studios and United Artists.

  • To be honest, this doesn't have any direct effect on Stargate. Still, since they're out of bankruptcy maybe they'll contemplate starting Stargate back up again.

  • If MGM was smart, they would bring the TV SG writers on board for an SG movie, and sell shares for that SG production. The market is there, and the movie would be a hit. Dean Devlin is taking way to long to get his SG "the original movie" part II off the ground, and the public would be more receptive to a movie on the TV Story line. Just sayin'... However, at the end of the day, they (MGM) probably will not go public after all. At this point, these current actions could simply be to calm their backers, by showing them that the option to go public is a possiblity. No matter how this turns out, MGM needs to reconsider SG in some form, and let us gate lovers help them pay some of their bills! :) J.S. ... PS. SG-1 is now NUMBER ONE on MGM's FB page regarding their Stargate SG 1 posting there. It past Rocky this week! And if you go there, to MGM's FB page, it is now like Stargate central! ... lol

  • Well it just means their somewhat more likely to consider new Stargate material with new capital to spend on it. I think if they do (without being a reboot), which is a long shot, they'll wait a couple of years when Nielsen has online and dvr being considered.

With Amanda Tappings' success, I think one avenue they could take is a series revolving around the George Hammond. I know that the Earth ships in SG have mostly acted as support roles and not exploration, but there's obviously decades of success with starship shows like Star Trek. It could work.

Probably a reboot in the next decade is more likely, though. :(

  • Even if Stargate did come back, it wouldn't be with the Stargate TV cast we loved on SG1, SGA or SGU. It would be a reboot. New actors. Period. :(

  • @buddyglenn Well.. SGU who I liked very much had new cast.. I don't see the problem.. I don't expect SG1 or SGA to continue.. those shows are done, SGU is discontinued..(Arguably the wraith are still running around in the Pegasus galaxy, but I just don't see how to defeat them, the ancients fought them for over 100's of years, it would be highly unrealistic if we all of the sudden pulled a deus ex out of our asses and wiped them out completely..)

  • Would you really be happy with a movie? I mean think about it...Would you rather watch season 10 of SG1 or the Ark of truth? If I remember correctly It's roughly the same cost. And a Season of Stargate has much more Rewatchability (Is that even a word?) Don't you think? I mean ANY stargate at this point is better then no stargate, but....

As far as bringing back SGU and the actors..... Well they all went it Stasis right? And I could see the actors that they couldn't get back having there characters stasis pod's fail. And they said it possibly take 3 years to cross the void............I mean Destiny has been known to act on it's own before, So I could see it sacrificing some of the pods to keep the others going.... Or maybe Eli got lonely while trying to get the last pod working and he brought Gin out of memory "storage". After they can't fix the last pod, Gin would pretend to get the pod working long enough for Eli to go under and then Reroute that pod's system from Rush to Eli. That way you have a great excuse for the actors who they can't get back not to be there.
