Gatecon Announces 2020 Event ‘Full Circle’

By the time this year’s big fan event Gatecon: The Invasion was drawing to a close, one thing was clear to the convention’s veteran organizers: they wanted to do it again.

That’s not always a given. Gatecon held its first event back in 2000 as an entirely fan-run, volunteer, and not-for-profit event, intending it to be a one-time thing. But Gatecon kept coming back again and again. But by 2010 organizers had decided they were probably done.

A fan stands up to ask the panel a question at Gatecon: The Invasion.

After a 6-year hiatus the 2016 event signaled a sort of rebirth to Gatecon, which gathers dozens of actors and hundreds of fans from all over the world for three days of fellowship, fun, and celebrating Stargate.

Now the party is on again, with organizers announcing Gatecon: Full Circle for 2020. It will mark Gatecon’s twentieth anniversary.

The “Full Circle” theme isn’t just the title of Stargate SG-1‘s sixth season finale but a symbol of the fan organization’s storied history.

“‘Full Circle’ represents not only the Stargate but is the symbolism of our journey so far as a group of organisers,” Gatecon organizer Richard Pasco told GateWorld. The name is a symbol “of our experiences in 2000 when we staged our first event (and the steep learning curve it provided); deciding whether to proceed with the 2001 event that took place in the wake of 9-11; testing the waters with two U.K. Gatecons (and the cancellation of a third); taking time away that turned into a 6-year break, and then coming back with new events.”

Gatecon’s Allan Gowen thanks fellow convention organizers (from left) Ian Rogers, Stef Rogers, Fryn Rogers, and Richard Pasco.

Pasco also said that the current team of five organizers hope that Sue Seeley — member of the original “C4” team of Gatecon organizers — might be able to return for Gatecon’s anniversary. Seely retired from the group in 2005.

The dates for Full Circle have yet to be set. Pasco told GateWorld that organizers want to keep the event at the popular Sheraton Vancouver Airport Hotel, though the venue currently does not have an open weekend in September of 2020. The team is currently exploring alternate dates at the hotel.

Fans who are interested in attending the 2020 celebration should pencil in your trip to Vancouver now! Then stick with GateWorld for our ongoing coverage from Gatecon: The Invasion.
