The Stargate Holiday Gift Guide (2022)

Maybe you’re shopping for that Stargate fan in your life, or maybe (like us) you just like shopping for yourself. Either way, we’ve rounded up a list of Stargate goodies you can pick up this holiday season!

There are just a few newcomers to our list this year, since we are still waiting for the Stargate: Timekeepers video game to be released and many other Stargate licensees have had a quiet year. We haven’t seen any new novels, and unfortunately the line of Stargate ship models has come to a screeching halt (or … failed to enter hyperspace? what’s a better metaphor here?).

Nevertheless! We have some cool items to round out your Stargate collection this season, some old and some new in 2022.

All prices are in U.S. dollars and are current as of the date of publication, but check these sites for the most current. We’ve linked mostly to U.S. retailers here, but do check your local region for pricing and availability. (Some retailers will also ship internationally.)

UNAUTHORIZED OFFWORLD ACTIVATION!

$19.99 (paperback) or $7.99 (Kindle) – Amazon

One newcomer this in 2022 is this collection of non-fiction essays exploring the Stargate film and television franchise. It’s not licensed by MGM (hence the “Unauthorized!”), and features a preface by “Skaara” actor Alexis Cruz. Essays look at topics like Stargate’s approach to storytelling; the Furlings; mythology; science and Atlantis; religion and the Goa’uld (written by GateWorld’s own Darren Sumner); cast changes; spin-offs; and much more.

There’s even an essay here titled “Stargate Merchandise: Why Isn’t There More Stuff?” Yeah, we’re feeling that.

STARGATE: THE BLU-RAY COLLECTION

$179.99 (Blu-ray) – Amazon
$109.99 (DVD) – Amazon

If the Stargate fan in your life doesn’t own the show yet, this might be a great time to add an entire series (or the whole franchise!) to their physical collection. What better way to fight the confusion of Stargate constantly jumping around to different streaming services? Just own the show so you can watch it whenever you want!

Stargate SG-1 has only been available on Blu-ray for a couple of years now, and it’s a nice picture upgrade from the DVD edition. The Visual Entertainment release is advertised as a new “super-clean picture”: these episodes have been digitally upscaled and polished with dynamic noise reduction. This release is not perfect (especially on the audio side), but it’s by far the most beautiful the show has ever looked on a modern, 4K television.

The complete franchise set includes all 10 seasons of SG-1, five seasons of Atlantis, and two seasons of Stargate Universe. It does not include the two SG-1 movies, the original feature film, or the 2009 Final Cut of the SG-1 pilot movie.

These shows are also available individually, so let’s briefly look at each of those …

STARGATE SG-1: THE COMPLETE SERIES (BLU-RAY)

$109.99 (Blu-ray) – Amazon
$74.99 (DVD) – Amazon

For SG-1‘s first-ever release on high-definition home media, publisher VEI did not produce a proper remaster of the series — which would be a costly process that entails going back to the original film and digital files, and possibly rebuilding some visual effects sequences from scratch. Instead this is an upscale, which uses artificial intelligence to produce a higher resolution picture based off the original, finished episodes. Again, there’s also some smoothing and digital noise reduction here, which produces a nice, clean picture.

On the whole, this Blu-ray release is a solid set for first-time buyers. The episodes look great, and the early seasons of the show — before production switched to filming with digital HD cameras, beginning with Season Eight — have never looked better. Most (but not all) of the bonus features from the previous DVD releases are here. The audio is a bit less remarkable, and audiophiles who want a true 5.1 surround sound experience should stick with the older DVD releases from Sony and 20th Century Fox.

STARGATE ATLANTIS: THE COMPLETE SERIES (BLU-RAY)

$59.99 (Blu-ray) – Amazon
$44.99 (DVD) – Amazon

The spin-off series Stargate Atlantis did get a Blu-ray release prior to VEI’s release. VEI’s edition uses the digital noise reduction process to produce what the publisher calls a “new super enhanced picture” — which some people like, and others find off-putting. As a budget line what the VEI releases have going for them is the price: the original Blu-ray release is still north of $80 (U.S.).

The SGA release also comes with more than 50 hours of bonus features. We haven’t tested the audio tracks here yet, but from all appearances this set seems to stick close to the previous releases of the show. It’s a great budget option.

STARGATE UNIVERSE: THE COMPLETE SERIES (BLU-RAY)

$32.99 (Blu-ray) – Amazon
$24.99 (DVD) – Amazon

Last but not least is VEI’s release of SGU on Blu-ray and DVD. The third live-action series in the franchise aired for just two seasons before it was cancelled, and only one of those seasons was ever released on Blu-ray. So this is a great set to add to your collection, if for nothing else than to have all 40 episodes on physical media in HD.

Along with those episodes the publisher has included the original production commentaries on every episode, along with more than two hours of bonus features. SGU was made in the era of high-def video and full surround sound mixes, so there shouldn’t be any concerns here about what’s in the box.

STARGATE AUDIO DRAMAS

$30.22 to $42.31Big Finish

Now in 2022 these awesome and original audio dramas from Big Finish Productions are finally back in print! These were released while the Stargate series were still in production, and fell out of print more than a decade ago. After their license lapsed Big Finish couldn’t even sell the digital version, and the prices of physical discs skyrocketed. Now the license is active again, and Big Finish is selling three collections of all the past stories.

These are available as digital downloads only. Each of the three collections includes six individual stories and a running time around 6 hours. The one Stargate Atlantis and two Stargate SG-1 collections feature the voices of original cast members from the shows.

STARGATE: 25th ANNIVERSARY EXPANDED LIMITED EDITION (2-CD SET)

$29.98La-La Land Records

If the Stargate fan in your life is anything like us, they love listening to great movie scores. This 2-CD set is the definitive edition of David Arnold’s outstanding score from the original Stargate feature film, which burst onto the big screen in October of 1994. In 2019 La-La Land Records released a newly remastered and extended version of the movie soundtrack, commemorating the film’s 25th anniversary. The total run time is 109 minutes of great cinematic music.

This one was previous sold out and is now back in stock on the publisher’s Web site. (Don’t pay Amazon’s current asking price of $50.) But it is a limited run, so now is the time to add it to your collection!

STARGATE T-SHIRTS!

$15.00 to $27.00Amazon

Flex your fandom with some pretty cool T-shirts available on Amazon from sellers like Geek Teez and Trevco. (Some others are definitely not licensed, but if you want a Goa’uld symbiote coming out of your abdomen we won’t judge.)

And yep, there’s also hoodies. If you’re not looking to invest in a full Blu-ray collection, these are very affordable and sure to put a smile on your fan’s face.

STARGATE NOVELS

$4.99 to $16.95 (Kindle & Paperback) – Amazon

Maybe there hasn’t been any new Stargate novels for a few years now, but you can still add to your collection from the dozens of books published by our friends over at Fandemonium. They have been publishing original Stargate novels under license from MGM for more than 15 years, imagining brand new adventures for the SG-1 and Atlantis teams.

These books are written by real Stargate fans, who for years have lived and breathed these characters and their adventures on screen. If you haven’t dabbled in the Stargate novels, there’s no time like the present to jump in!

Where to start? If you’re an SG-1 fan, check out Sally Malcolm’s A Matter of Honor and The Cost of Honor, or the Asgard story Roswell by Sonny Whitelaw. The must-read for Atlantis fans is the “Legacy” series, which picks up the story where the TV series left off. There are currently nine “Legacy” novels and one novella, starting with Homecoming by Jo Graham and Melissa Scott.

STARGATE COMICS (TRADE PAPERBACK COLLECTION)

From $19.99 (Digital & Paperback) – Amazon

We’re still holding out hope that MGM will give the go-ahead for more Stargate comics in 2023. But in the meantime publisher American Mythology has collected the most recent series into a set of trade paperbacks. The two Stargate Atlantis volumes each collect six issues of the comics from writers Mark L. Haynes and J.C. Vaughn. Volume 1 covers the stories “Back to Pegasus” and “Gateways.” Volume 2 includes “Hearts & Minds” and “Singularity.”

The Stargate Universe “Back to Destiny” series imagines how a third season for the cancelled series might have opened, with the crew of Destiny awakened from stasis to a startling realization on board the Ancient vessel. This one also spans six issues.

The physical edition of these trade paperbacks appears to have gone out of print, so beware of high prices on the secondary market. As of press time Amazon still has a few copies of Atlantis Volume 2 paperback left at the $19.99 MSRP, but when these are gone they’re gone. (You can also check in with your local comic shop to see if they can still order them.)

STARGATE SG-1 ROLEPLAYING GAME

$59.99StargateTheRPG.com

The Stargate SG-1 Roleplaying Game from Wyvern Gaming is the perfect gift for the tabletop gaming nerd in your family. This is an incredibly well-designed game that throws players into the Stargate universe, with original characters teaming up for new adventures through the Stargate. The game is officially licensed by MGM, and players can create their own characters from a variety of Milky Way species, register online to track progression through multiple play sessions, and team up to represent Earth’s “Phoenix Base” on off-world adventures through the Stargate.

Use the game’s setting and D&D 5e mechanics to create your own storylines, or play through Season One of pre-written episodes from Wyvern’s writers. Start with the core rulebook, which is available in hardcover or as a digital download.

Will there be more Stargate goodies in 2023? We’re still waiting on the PC strategy game (Stargate: Timekeepers), and this might be the year that Fandemonium returns with new novels.
