GateWorld Podcast: Should the Stargate Program Be Public?

Visit the GateWorld Podcast page for more about the show!

For years the writers of Stargate have drawn upon the S.G.C.’s super-secret nature for story-telling. What would happen if word got out on Earth that the U.S. military was visiting alien planets and making enemies? How would people respond? How would other governments respond? Should the news be announced deliberately? And how would it impact the stories that the franchise tells in the future?

The question has led to some interesting stories on Stargate SG-1 in particular, and it’s this week’s topic for the podcast! GateWorld Forum’s Tame Farrar steps up to co-host the show, for an important and challenging discussion topic.

  • Podcast #54: You guys are missing the ball. You are scared of change. You talk about not trusting the government. That alone is enough reason for the program to be public. After all, the program is completely under the control of government now. And the potential benefits (which you seem to fear) are huge. Freed of the shackles of keeping everything secret, they could unleash the resources of the entire planet to build whatever they want. Let free enterprise (or at least more then small cirle of people you can trust to keep the secret) at the technology and the ability to travel to other stars will lead to incredible discoveries. The Stargate would be available for addressing problems like overpopulation, world hunger, etc. Put the stargate on international territory (Kind of like Washington DC is not really part of any state) and get it out of the hands of the military. It would then become a center of commerce, travel, and culture. This would definitely be a whole new world. Which means its fertile ground for writing. They could create a new series centered around the concept. Force the writers to think about the impact this would have. Make the military nothing more then a background element - it's there to handle emergencies, but not in any way the center of the show. At least some episodes (maybe all of them?) would deal with different groups and how they think the stargate should be used or not used. Ranging from crackpot type groups like Flat Earth Society to more plausible groups that raise legimate concerns that make you question how things are being done. There would also be a terrorist element as well - there will be people that resort to violence to address their fear of the unknown and resistance to the massive changes that would be taking place. Personal request: no big bad guys. I'm tired of enemies like the Guald and the Ori. They are a menace for a couple of episodes and then just end up looking ridiculous and ineffective because our heroes have to be able to make progress in the fight against them. Perhaps such a series should be based on of the first colonies (sort of Alpha site opened up to the public) and it's efforts to become self sustainable and meet the goals of their sponsors (which may be conflicting with each other). That way you don't necessarily have to deal with media and public reaction in every episode. Or maybe a series (or season) based on the PR campaign that does a slow reveal. Instead of just calling a press conference and revealing it all at once, you create a program of carefully controlled "leaks" and release of infomation. You could maybe have some new upcoming threat that allows humanity to be united in their preperation for it's coming? Probably a few missteps along the way as they misjudge public reaction, but work toward goal of public program that benefits all of humanity (Earth born and otherwise). After all, the military of Earth is now the dominant force in the galaxy. Isn't it a bit silly that the people of Earth are the only ones that are ignorant of that fact?

Oh and another thing - the factory where the ships are being built is a small part of the puzzle when building a fleet. You have to have a whole network of suppliers, gathering of raw materials, shipping parts, etc. Plus all the people involved.

  • Absolutely not! Never! I like the idea that the Stargate could be real. Its current, with realistic ppl, with the USAF. I love all that. But if they made it public, it would no longer feel real. It would ruin A LOT of the appeal for me.

  • That would really ruin Stargate. As it is right now, the Stargate COULD be real. If it went public, it could not.

  • i wouldn't mind it going public. i didn't feel this way years ago (right up to season 10 actually), but i feel it could work now. why? because it would be different, and give the writers a wealth of new ideas to write off of.

  • Yes it should be made public, it simply getting unrealistic that many personal and scientists and politicans could know about and keep it all a secrete.
Do the writers have the gut to go public, probably not.
But I just want to see Atlantis decloak in front of a huge crowd.

  • I think it should be revealed! And the perfect way to do it would be right out of The Day The Earth Stood Still... An Al'Kesh appears and lands in the square in Washington, D.C. and while surrounded by the military, Tok'ra and Jaffa representatives appear to speak to the Tauri...

  • Never really understand the stargate could be real mindset. That thought never crossed my mind and when I hear that other people think that I just shake my head in amazement/ bewilderment. They would get along great with my 12 year old.

I too, would love to see Atlantic decloaking scene.

  • I can't belive you people. What we have here is a Sci Fi universe that, for once, makes sense... sort of. It could all be for real. And no (decil76), it's not about actually believeing it's for real, but more like having the illusion that it could. Make the Stargate go public, and all is shattered.

The arguement that it should go public because it would be impossible to keep it a secret makes sense. But people forget one thing. Do you want every episode to revolve around the media circus surrounding the Stargate Program? Because that's what you'll get by the means of your so called "realism".

You people who think the Stargate should be public have totally misunderstood the whole point of Stargate. Go watch something else.
