MGM: Stargate Universe returns April 2

If you’d made us guess exactly when the second half of Stargate Universe‘s freshman season would begin, we’d have picked Friday, April 2.

Even before the series premiered this fall, Syfy said that the second half would air in “Q2” — the second quarter of 2010.  And April 2 happens to be the first Friday in Q2.

MGM confirmed today via their official Stargate Web site that this is indeed Syfy’s target date for “Space,” the eleventh episode of SGU Season One.  Of course, that’s subject to change between now and the spring, and Syfy is still the boss of its own scheduling.

Barring any unforeseen breaks, that would put the season final on June 4, 2010.

We haven’t heard anything about the show’s return to Sky1 in the U.K. or SPACE in Canada yet, but it’s a safe bet that new episodes of Universe will pick up in April and air around the same time as the U.S. premieres.

Meanwhile, the Battlestar Galactica prequel Caprica will take over Stargate‘s time slot starting on January 22, giving it 10 weeks before the return of SGU.

Season Two will begin shooting around the first of March, and will premiere in the fall — likely the first week of October.

  • These large gaps are actually detrimental to the show. The same thing happened in the last season of Battlestar Galactica, and by the time the show resumes, you are having troubles remembering all the little details that made the show great. Which was why I rewatched the entire series over again this fall. Watching the episodes in quick succession allowed me to really see the 'big picture' of that particular series.

These gaps will risk losing the show viewers

  • It's nice that they give us an airdate. But I'd still like to know why there has to be a five month gap in the middle of the season. What reasoning do they have for that?

  • @mistergroenevingers

The Winter Olympics will demolish everything on television and are taking place in Vancouver where they shoot which will be an added disruption.

Many shows are not coming back until later, but because they shoot elsewhere they will return a little sooner than spring as they will not have had to stop shooting to accomodate the crush of crowds in the host city.

  • @zackwbrandon
I see how the olympics could be a disruption, but they don't last 5 months I think. Besides they don't really have to stop shooting since all episodes for season one have already been wrapped. It remains a curious issue for me. Does anyone know the actual reason for the mid season break?

  • OLYMPICS? Really, My God!!!! Who gives a damn about a pagan festival, screw that man, bring on the stargate.

  • These bloody mid-season breaks have annoyed me since they started, but between this one and the final seasons of BSG, it's enough to make me NOT watch any more Sci-Fi shows (i refuse to use their stupid new name, the english language has degraded enough). By the time "Season 1.5" rolls around, I will have lost interest in SGU, and I suspect many other people will. My expectation is the ratings will start lower than expected, fall during the "season", Season 2.0 will be the last one for the series, and the quality of programming on SciFi will fall even further into B-Movie land, and all available timeslots will be filled with everyplot disaster movie like "ice tornados" which used the same basic forumula as that earthquake film they did.

Seriously. Give us more than 10 episodes to work with. It was old in 2007, it's geriatric now.

  • @Robinio
At least there's still 15 seasons and 3 movies you could enjoy during the cold dark winter. ;)

  • You guys are right. Waiting until April for the half of your FIRST season is idiotic! The Stargate brand is strong, but I don't know these characters like the ones from the past. I don't think the ratings will recover from this.
