Stargate Atlantis: The Complete Series is coming to DVD … again! MGM and Fox Home Entertainment have announced a new release date and a lower price for the gift set, which will be in stores in North America on March 23.
The 26-disc collector’s set includes all 100 episodes from the series, including the extended versions of Season Five’s “Vegas” and “Enemy At the Gate.” It will also include all the bonus material from the individual season releases (the discs are likely the same), including tons of episode commentaries and behind-the-scenes featurettes.
Check out the full press release on Page 2 for a listing of the individual disc contents.
A version of the set was previously released last October (story). While we never saw it ourselves, there was no indication at the time of any bonus material original to this release. Amazon.com still lists it as containing 25 discs, indicating the same content as the individual season releases (five discs per season).
The new set does include a bonus disc, including two new featurettes: “Mission 100: Atlantis Reaches a Milestone,” and “Stargate Atlantis: A Retrospective.”
According to our friends at TV Shows On DVD, the original October release was exclusive to Amazon, and March 23 is the date that the set goes wide to other retailers. While Amazon still lists the set with only 25 discs, they have updated the price and listed the bonus disc’s two featurettes in the product description.
Episodes are presented in their original 1.78:1 widescreen aspect ratio, with 5.1 Dolby Surround. French and Spanish audio tracks are also available.
There is no word on a Blu-ray release of the Complete Series. MGM tells GateWorld that future high definition releases for the Stargate franchise will depend on viewer demand — seen particularly in how well Stargate Atlantis: Fans’ Choice performs on Blu-ray.
The suggested retail price for the new set is $199.98, down from last fall’s $259.98. Fans north of the border will also be happy to see that the Canadian price is now equivalent: $199.98 CAN.
NEXT: The press release
Essentially $200 for new packaging. MGM must be hurting. Now if it were blu-ray I could see the steep price. There is a HD market out there Mr. Producers. You ought to know. You shot the dam show in HD.
I got it last year for $80 thanks to Amazon’s gold deal of the day.
And yet again, Eurpean fans don’t get this one.
Oh sure, we do get a european release of the whole series, but the boxart for the American release is about a million times better than the european release. And now, with this new release, a bonus disc that other fans in the world won’t get.
Talk about rubbing salt into the wound. >:(
i have the single sets. what do i need this for?
There is no reason that I would buy this, espeically at $200.00, for a DVD version. Blu-Ray; yes, DVD Hell No. Time to update if you want sales.
i’ve never bought any of the movies, couldn’t afford it for some time, and my new job isn’t paying nearly enough (210), and that’s every two weeks, and though i started last week, i don’t get paid until next week and once i’m paid, i’m paying a fraction of whom i owe and that’s before i buy clothes which i don’t have (beyond taters) and need desperately, because i’m a big guy and my clothes are pretty much worn out. And even though i’ve downloaded eps of most of the shows, in the next few months, i’m buying me a… Read more »
Any word on just how well that bluray I designed the cover for has sold? I mean, my entire family each bought copies so that’s at least a dozen sold!
ok mgm is screwed and going under everyone knows it its too bad i would be happy to pay $200 for blu also!!!!!!!!!!!! WAKE UP MGM.! mgm could do a pre order for a blu-ray set and just make whats ordered!
If it was Blu-ray, I’d buy it. DVD… no thanks. Don’t buy DVD’s anymore
I bought all the single sets new for $80 total, why would I pay $120 more for 2 featurettes and not even blu-ray?
Sci-Fi fan bases (including stargate) are probably more prone to modern technology like bluray and hdtv’s. Why they don’t release it on blu I don’t understand. Alot of people either have a bluray player and refused to buy dvd (like me) or know they’re upgrade to bluray in the near future and don’t want to double dip.
I get the $200 is probably the manufacturers suggested retail price, which no retailer in their right mind actually charges. So I take it with a grain of salt that Amazon would charge substantially less.
put it on bluray already.
Let me guess = No one bought it. Why would they, S5 sucked.
If I didn’t already own all the DVD’s I’d consider buying this. And I thought quite a bit of Season 5 (with some really notable exceptions) was good.
i have all the sets so i wont be buying this one
I’m only missing season 5 and am therefor not really interested in this box set. They always release these things long after the seasons have been aired so by then the fans mostly already own the season boxes. Still it’s nice for new fans or for fans that for some reason hadn’t gotten around to buying the boxes yet. What’s this I’m reading about extended versions for the last two episodes of season 5?? I’m glad I haven’t bought S5 yet. Hopefully there’ll be a new box for that season that features these extended episodes, plus that bonus disc that’s… Read more »
Only missing season 5 aswell, if I didn’t have the previous 4 would probably get this.
If there is extended versions for the last 2 episodes I hope that it makes the end make more seance (Such as a little more explanation of the Wormhole Drive).
What? I didn’t pay over $100 and they’re upping the price by just dumping these two little things in there? WTF.
BLUUUUUUUUUUUU RAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
TPTB – Wake up!
Wow…i bought my set for $88 at Thanksgiving last year…Thanks Amazon, i didn’t even realize it was an exclusive release. BTW, any upscaling DVD player can make them almost as nice as their theoretical (read: nonexistent) blu-ray counterparts :)
