Falling Skies earns a third season

U.S. cable network TNT is happy with its hit science fiction drama, renewing Falling Skies for a third season this week.

The show follows the human resistance in the wake of an alien invasion that devastates civilization on Earth, and is currently halfway through its 10-episode second season.

Ten episodes have been ordered for Season Three, which will air in the summer of 2013, Deadline reports.

In addition to series leads Noah Wyle (ER) and Moon Bloodgood (Terminator: Salvation), the show features former Stargate actors Colin Cunningham (Major Paul Davis) and Ryan Robbins (Ladon Radim) as members of a rogue gang who join up with the 2nd Mass to fight the alien invaders.

Remi Aubuchon, who served as a writer-producer on Season Two of Stargate Universe, serves as showrunner.

Season Two of Falling Skies premiered to 4.46 million viewers (up against the NBA playoffs), and has fallen to 3.64 million viewers this past weekend. While this is down from the first season, the show also benefits from DVR-delayed viewing, strong 18-49 demographic numbers, and success in 115 overseas markets.

Falling Skies airs Sundays at 9/8c on TNT. Follow the show on our sister site, SciFiStream.com!

  • It's great seeing TNT continuing on with their sci-fi series. My hope is it will give confidence to writers and producers out there and even more sci-fi will come to our screens.

  • Really enjoying this show, season 1 was bit of a slow burn at times. Only two episodes into S2 here (Ireland) now and the refinements already looking good. Nice to have some decent Sc-Fi still on the box.

  • I am enjoying the series and am very pleased to see that it is secure for the immediate future.

  • I especially like the little snippets of programming they manage to squeeze in between the commercial breaks.

  • Thanks for reminding me about Falling Skies. I need to catch up on a couple of episodes before they roll off the on demand screen.

  • This is great news. I recently got into the show and I'm glad I did because it looks like it'll be around for a while. I just hope TNT doesn't pull a SyFy next year. While the show hasn't quite gripped me the way The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Fringe, Doctor Who or more recently Primeval (which I recently got into and loved it) did, I still find it enjoyable and better than most of the other boring crap that's on TV these days, and its nice to have something to watch during the summer when most networks are on a break.

  • Why not 16 shows or 20 shows per season? I have really liked the show and would watch it all year long if they offered it. It would say it's good enough to compete with the big boys during the fall/winter/spring seasons.

  • TNT has some pretty good programming now. I wonder if the'd want to pick up another scifi franchise? TNT, please buy the rights Stargate. I feel a little like my childhood ended on the cliffhanger.

  • Falling Skies getting another Season is good news.Love to see more Stargate of Course. In the fall I will probably just have to watch them all again as I own all the SG1 and SGA and SGU Sets.
