First Independence Day Trailer Hints At Stargate’s Movie Future

The first trailer has landed for Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich’s long-awaited follow-up to the 1996 smash hit Independence Day — and it gives us a good sense of what Stargate will look like when it gets its own twenty-first century spruce-up on the big screen.

Independence Day: Resurgence will serve as a direct sequel to its predecessor, bringing back original cast members like Jeff Goldblum (“David Levinson”), Bill Pullman (“President Whitmore”), Judd Hirsch (“Julius Levinson”), Brent Spiner (“Dr. Brakish Okun”), and others, and adding new headliners Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games) and Sela Ward (CSI: NY, and Emmerich’s The Day After Tomorrow).

The trailer dropped on December 13, and in less than two days has been watched more than 9 million times on 20th Century Fox’s YouTube channel alone (not accounting for millions more for other copies).

Take a look at the trailer below. The movie opens on June 24, 2016.

The trailer gives fans the first look not only at the ID4 sequel but at the sort of look that Emmerich can accomplish with the reboot of Stargate on the big screen. Emmerich, who directed 1994’s Stargate, will direct the movie that he and producer Dean Devlin intend to be the first of a new Stargate trilogy.

Emmerich has stated in the past that he planned to turn his attention to Stargate after Resurgence was complete but before a planned third Independence Day movie.

Visual effects have certainly come a long way, and here Emmerich and team look to be making full use of new technologies married with the same character types and story sensibilities of the original.

Of course, having Stargate ready to go to casting and into production depends upon a completed script with approval from everyone involved. That script is still being written by James A. Woods and Nicolas Wright (story). (The two also helped to write Resurgence for Emmerich’s Centropolis Entertainment.)

  • I have to admit, I'm kind of excited about Independence Day: Resurgence... less so about the Devlin/Emmerich Stargate reboot since it was the television continuity I fell in love with, but short of a series of hugely unlikely events it's happening and can't be stopped.

  • I hope we get new charachters so when there will be another discousion about stargate tv series there wont be any conflict with the old material. Eventhough I would love to get more sg-1, atlantis...! But if we are realistic we are probably never gonna get a reboot for old series. With new stuff we at least get that chance to hope for a new one.

  • To be honest the only films or TV series that would really make me happy, would be Stargate Atlantis Season 6 and beyond.

  • Apparently Dr. Okun was in a coma. I am not impressed with the trailer, it's very boiler plate. Also, unlike a lot of people, I find that speech of the presidents irritating and poorly written. However, I do have hopes for the movie anyway just because I am such a fan of the last movie!
