When GateWorld published our “Best Episode from Each Season” video for SG-1 last month, one common response stood out: How could “Urgo” not be voted the best of Season Three … or any season, for that matter?
Dom DeLuise’s guest turn as the lovably annoying alien brain implant Urgo definitely made for one of the show’s most entertaining hours. “Urgo” might be the perfect episode, mixing the show’s signature humor (dialed up to 11) with a science fiction premise, the unity of the SG-1 team, and an unexpected tug at the heart strings.
DeLuise’s three sons also made appearances on the show. Peter was a long-time director, producer, and writer for Stargate SG-1, frequently appearing on screen as a background player in the episodes he directed (which included “Urgo”). David DeLuise played Detective Pete Shanahan, Sam Carter’s boyfriend (the one who didn’t die). And youngest son Michael played Nick Marlowe, the actor behind “Colonel Danning” on the show-within-the-show, Wormhole X-Treme!Dom DeLuise’s career today stands as comedy legend. He appeared in such classics as Cannonball Run and Smokey and the Bandit II, alongside Burt Reynolds. DeLuise passed away in 2009 at the age of 75; Reynolds followed just this month.
The opening day of Gatecon: The Invasion in Vancouver this month was sure to bring stories of Dom, of the antics inside the DeLuise home, and of the constant laughter on the set of “Urgo.” David DeLuise took to the stage to help launch the fan convention, soon joined by “Teal’c” actor Christopher Judge.
