Hewlett also stars in the film as Patrick, a man driven over the edge by his sister’s new relationship with a soap opera star. Co-staring is Atlantis‘s Paul McGillion (“Carson Beckett”) and Hewlett’s own real-life sister, actress Kate Hewlett.
Stargate actors Christopher Judge (“Teal’c”) and Rachel Luttrell (“Teyla Emmagan”) will also appear in the film, produced by David Hewlett’s partner Jane Loughman and Stargate producer John G. Lenic. Stargate stunt and fight coordinator James Bamford is also on board the project, as is SG-1 director of photography Jim Menard and Bill Mizel, first assistant director on SG-1 and Atlantis.
Also in the cast is actress Amanda Byram, host of The Swan, Entertainment Tonight – UK Edition, and Paradise Hotel.
Here’s the story summary:
Squabbling siblings Patrick (David Hewlett) and Marilyn (Kate Hewlett) have always driven each other a little crazy. But when Marilyn brings home her new TV-star fianc‚ (from the space soap Star-crossed), Ryan (McGillion), it seems to drive Patrick over the edge. First, he tries to drive a wedge between the happy couple … then he reaches for sharper instruments. Every family has a few skeletons in the closet; “A Dog’s Breakfast” is the hell-of-a-mess Patrick makes when he tries to add another to his.
“A Dog’s Breakfast” is a head-smacking, bone-breaking, fianc‚-bashing comedy/horror about a family that just loves themselves to pieces.

The film is now shooting, with the goal of a mid-June completion — at which point the producers will seek a distribution deal.
“We would hope that we will be able to get a theatrical release through either the distributor, or through the festival circuit, but we will see how the movie finishes and see which route we think is the best way to take,” Lenic told GateWorld. “We would hope that through some sort of international distribution deal also comes a television release deal, but we will see.”
