A third Stargate SG-1 movie and the first Stargate Atlantis movie will film simultaneously in 2009, actress Amanda Tapping (“Samantha Carter”) told reporters at a Colorado news conference last week and Sci Fi Wire is reporting.
“Rumor has it [that the third SG-1 DVD movie will shoot] late spring / early summer of next year, but I honestly couldn’t tell you beyond that,” Tapping said. “I know Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis will be shooting movies at that time.”
Tapping confirmed that she agreed to appear in the next SG-1 movie. (She may also appear in the Atlantis film, as well.) “I know nothing about it, except that I’ve been asked if I would make myself available, and of course I said, ‘Yes.'” In addition, she will also appear in the final episode of Stargate Atlantis. “Enemy At the Gate” airs in the U.S. in January.
Though rumors of the next SG-1 movie have been circulating for a few months now, MGM has yet to announce that it has officially been given a green light. The script is reportedly being written by Stargate SG-1 executive producer and co-creator Brad Wright, who is also busy getting the new television series Stargate Universe off the ground (story).
That series begins filming in early February, likely ahead of both movies.
The Stargate Atlantis movie, meanwhile, is currently being penned by executive producers Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie.
Just when will the two films be finished and ready to watch? MGM hasn’t announced anything yet, but if they do wait until the spring or summer to film, it’s likely that at least the SG-1 film won’t be ready until 2010. SCI FI has said that it will premiere the Atlantis movie in 2009. The SG-1 movie might follow the first two, The Ark of Truth and Continuum, in going straight to DVD.
