Wright: SGU Season Two offers more adventure, humor

Eli (David Blue) will finally get some help in the levity department this season on SGU.

The second season of Stargate Universe will offer up more of the classic adventure and humor that long-time fans of the Stargate franchise love, according to executive producer Brad Wright.  Wright talked about the show’s upcoming year in a new video interview with Collider.com.

“This show is opening up a little in terms of its ability to be a little more of the adventure that the other shows were,” he said.  “And with that comes a little bit more of the ability to do humor.  Eli has always brought that to the show.  It’s just now becoming a little bit broader.  Young has actually been quite funny in several episodes in Season Two.

“Just as the situation and the characters get to know each other a bit more, it becomes easier to do that.”

But “SGU will never be as broad as the two previous shows,” Wright added, “because it is trying to be a bit deeper in terms of character development.  It’s something we are trying to do.”

Guest stars from SG-1 and Atlantis do enable the writers to inject a little more of that mainstay Stargate humor.  In the upcoming episode “Seizure,” the arrival of actors David Hewlett and Robert Picardo made humor a virtual necessity.

Rodney McKay (just one of them) is headed to SGU later this season. From ''McKay and Mrs. Miller''

“It is fun to write McKay again,” Wright said.  “It is fun to have the sarcasm of Woolsey in a scene.  And it was almost impossible not to include some of the more forward humor that came with Atlantis.  It was easier to do with Atlantis than with SGU.”

“We want the audience to remember that … even though it’s visually different, it’s happening in this universe.  That’s why O’Neill was in so many episodes in Season One.””

And just what sort of story will require that the crew draw on the help of Rodney McKay and Richard Woolsey?  Wright compared the basic premise of the story to a much-loved SG-1 and Atlantis crossover episode.  “We’re going to see McKay and Woolsey in a fun sort of story that’s a little bit like ‘The Pegasus Project’ in terms of things that need to be done that affect both the Milky Way Galaxy and Destiny at the same time,” he said.

  • I for one don't want SGU to be like SG1 and SGA, I want it to be its own thing.

SGU is the dark version of SG1 just like DS9 was the dark version of Trek. Let it be its own thing and tell its story the way it needs to be told.

  • For my money, I prefer the characters to act as true-to-life as normal people would. That said, different people have different personalities and the interest comes from having them interact in realistic and interesting ways.

  • This is great. While there were funny moments in season one (albeit some of them contrived, for example, my friend and I kept laughing every time Rush and Young kept saying "For the sake of the Crew" for half of the season), the show really does need more humor. I'm also excited to see the show go for depth rather than breadth, if done right, it can be a really good show. Personally, I didn't like season one of SGU, but I loved SG1 and SGA so much that I think if anyone can pull it off right, they can. I'm all for giving them second chance. (I say that because in my opinion, season 1 of SGU was the worst season of stargate I've ever seen. Not do to the abstract nature of it, I really loved that, but do to the endless whining of the crew).

  • Thank god. I've been hoping they would change the style of the show to at least somewhat fit into the Stargate universe. Season 1 did have some good episodes but there was still WAY to much drama. I've had enough of the secrets between crew members and the romances. It really need to pull from its Stargate roots. Add some adventure, team work, some actual sci-fi like Carter/McKay's science knowledge, add to the mythology of the Stargate universe and some humor(O'Neill and Sheppard style).

This is great news. I really hope its true.

  • Unfortunately, for me it's just too little, too late. This SG fan gave up on the show a long time ago.

They changed the premise of a SG series too much and lost viewers. Now they want to change what they established again - but I don't think it'll gain them viewers, the show's just too serialized, you can't jump in whenever you want and know what's going on. I'm afraid, this change will cost them more viewers than they'll gain...

But good luck to its fans.

  • I wonder if this isn't just PR spin. And I still find it amusing some people think that the characters on this show are "normal" - big lol.
Oh well, enjoy your last season.

  • So we're going to have fun again are we? Bring in some square jawed guest start heros as well? Sorry, the fan bus already left without you. Might be a good idea to turn the lights on as well.

  • As long as they don't go TOO far in the light-hearted direction, I'm ok.... I want real world characters in real life situations faced with truly amazing circumstances. Throw in unpredictable alien encounters both celestial and living..... and then you have it.

I loved SGU's first season and I loved SG-1 and SGA.... but I wanted a heavier tone, they delivered.... and I wouldn't mind a little more humor, but keep it real.
