SGU’s new lead-in show: Star Trek: The Next Generation

EngageStargate Universe is getting a new lead-in show this week, as Syfy plans to drop the 8 p.m. repeats of last week’s episode.

The cable network will air fan-favorite, two-part episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation Tuesdays at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m., starting October 19, according to Syfy’s online schedule.  This will lead into its primetime line-up of new episodes of Syfy’s original dramas Stargate Universe (9 p.m.) and Caprica (10 p.m.).

The October/November line-up includes:

October 19 – “Redemption” (Parts 1 and 2)
October 26 – Stephen King’s The Tommyknockers (31 Days of Halloween promo)
November 2 – “Unification”
November 9 – “Time’s Arrow”
November 16 – “Chain Of Command”
November 23 – “Birthright”
November 30 – “Descent”

Re-airing SGU in the 8 p.m. time slot had the advantage of helping more casual viewers keep up with the show’s ongoing storylines, but also the disadvantage of not attracting any non-SGU viewers to the channel and hoping they’ll stick around for the new episode at 9 p.m. — the traditional function of  a lead-in show.

For those relying on those 8 p.m. reruns to catch last week’s episode, you can still set your DVR for 2 a.m. on Monday night / Tuesday morning.  Episodes can also be purchased to watch commercial-free at iTunes or Amazon.com.

Hulu, meanwhile, currently indicates that only the first three episodes of SGU Season Two will be available on the site the day after they air.  Assuming that bears out this week, Tuesday’s “Pathogen” may not be available until around October 27.

Tune in Tuesday on Syfy for a brand new episode of Stargate Universe at 9 p.m. (8 Central)!  Read all about the upcoming episodes in GateWorld’s Season Two episode guide.

  • *sigh* I loved Trek but this show is so old, and not likely to drawn in a larger audience for Stargate. It certainly will not attract new viewers to Syfy.

I wish that Syfy would buy up Terminator the Sarah Connor Chronicles and bring it back. That should would have done great business for Syfy.

I only wish I would have watched the SCC while it was on network tv so that I could have helped the ratings... alas it took Netflix streaming before I tried it... and I was immediately hooked. That kind of show could bring over a ton of new viewership to Syfy, much like SG1 did for Syfy back when they took the show from Fox.

  • Speak for yourself. Some shows are just so classic that they'll attract audiences to themselves just out of notoriety and then keep those people leading into the next programming. The people who aren't the generation of "look at something once/twice and never look at it again" will come to watch and old favorite and stay to watch something new.
I think this plan will work out for Sci-fi.
Gah, I can't get used to calling them Syfy. It's just so lame.

...and they still need to get rid of everything wrestling related.

  • As a co-incidence that's exactly what I'm watching now. Old seasons of STNG. In spite of everything today I'm still the optimist, believing that the future will look more like the Crystal Palace than some dark dingy public toilet.

  • TNG? As lead in to SGU? They really want SGU dead, huh?
Don't get me wrong, but setting aside the huge "age difference" the tone of those two shows and their basic principles are *so very different*, when it comes to SciFi you might as well call them polar opposites.
After watching Picard & crew enthusiastically breeze through space with a 99% ethically sound decision making process, full crew integration and an all round positive attitude, who'd really get the urge to subject themselves to oh so tormented Young & crew drudging trough space against their will, with petty plotting against random crew mates and a really depressed outlook?
Mindboggling. I'm very curious to see the ratings comparison between TNG, old (and in parts cheesy) as it is, and SGU.

  • TNG+SGU equals success, If you listen to the exact start of each episode this season you'll hear part of the DS9 intro song.

  • TNG may be older, but like SG1, I've never found it the least bit dated, and I can watch episodes I've seen(of either of those two series) over and over. TNG and SG1 (and LOST) remain my all time favs, but I have to say, SGU o hsd started to make a real impact on my viewing regimen. I haven't missed one episode, and especially this season, - in my opinion, this season's episodes of SGU are a whole standard higher than previously.
Hope SYFY's strategy works to add more viewers.

  • This is an interesting development! But I fail to see how airing TNG at 8:00pm is going to help Stargate Universe. I think that even though its 25 years old, TNG will still be able to draw in more viewers than Stargate Universe in the ratings, and that SGU will continue to drop. Does Syfy really believe that airing Star Trek before SGU is going to help SGU? Why would they think that? They will watch Star Trek TNG and then turn the channel when SGU comes on.

Im primarily a Trek fan, and I will watch ST:TNG at 8:00pm and then turn to NCIS:LA at 9:00pm. Thats until V comes back next month, and then I can watch TNG on Syfy, then turn to ABC for more great science fiction.

Why was the brilliant individual who came up with the theory that "lead-in" shows help the next show in the schedule? Thats why there ARE schedules in the first place. People set their DVR's and plan their viewing on those schedules. Its only a button mash away to change the channel.

  • I've watched Redemption so many times on BBC America the past month I do not ever want to watch it again.

  • So....basically...they're not showing "Last Weeks's" SGU followed by the "New" episode of SGU anymore? Correct?

    So....basically...if I miss "Last Week's" episode, I'm screwed? Correct?

    So....basically...Sci-fi wants SGU dead? Correct?

Leading in with TNG (Catered to older audiences) and following up with SGU (Catered to "younger" audiences) is a horrible idea.

Although I will say that it does seem the whole "Screw you fan base" movement is coming to an end. It seems with SGU's ratings falling, they want their original audience back. So they lure us in with TNG. Apology NOT ACCEPTED.
