Without network competition, Sanctuary’s ratings recover

Sanctuary‘s ratings are on the rebound since the conclusion of the big networks’ 2010-2011 broadcast season three weeks ago.  After bouncing back 39 percent in its first episode of the summer season (story), the fantasy series starring Stargate‘s Amanda Tapping is up another big leap this week.

“Out of the Blue,” the penultimate episode of Season Three, drew 1.201 million viewers (Live + Same Day) and a 0.4 rating in the Adults 18-49 demo, according to TVBytheNumbers.  That’s a gain of 31 percent and almost 300,000 viewers from the previous week, and the show’s highest rating for a Monday night episode yet.

But it’s still below the show’s Friday night average.  Sanctuary‘s tough time during the spring broadcast season — and its big improvement after the Monday night competition went away — further proves our theory that Mondays (and Tuesdays) just aren’t friendly to Syfy Channel dramas during the network broadcast season.

Sanctuary concludes its third season this Monday at 10/9c on Syfy.

EPISODE (air date) VIEWERS (million) CHANGE
Pax Romana (Apr. 15) 1.217
Hangover (Apr. 22) 1.424 + 17%
Move to Monday
One Night (Apr. 25) 0.868 – 39%
Metamorphosis (May 2) 0.838 – 3%
Wingman (May 9) 0.756 – 10%
Awakening (May 16) 0.815 + 8%
Normandy (May 23) 0.656 – 20%
Carentan (June 6) 0.915 + 39%
Out of the Blue (June 13) 1.201 + 31%

  • This further proves that not only are mondays and tuesdays bad for genre shows, but Fall/Spring are bad too!

  • this rating is definitely better! :D

but i'd still prefer it back on fridays, b/c the lower ratings will come right back when the huge network shows do. live + 7 days show the viewers are there, they're just dvr'ing to watch later, but that doesn't really matter to the $ ppl.

  • yaand if sgu didnt have to go up against networks their ratings wouldve been good too duh

  • It does show so far that it's not only the night of the week that the programmes are shown, but the competition they're up against.
Anything, and I mean anything SciFi puts up against established shows such as NCIS (or whatever it is that's shown, I'm a UKer) is going to lose no matter how good it is.
It's just a shame that the bleedin' obvious isn't getting through and great shows are being cancelled one after another in pursuit of viewers.
In the words of another show, it's happened before, it'll happen again.

  • I totally agree with your well stated reasons for that point. AND, it is all the more obvious when one adds that beyond moving Sanctuary to Monday nights after it had just returned from its winter break and had been on Friday just one time (or was it twice) before they moved it so unceremoniously to Mondays, with hardly any notice at all - beyond doing that incredible bit of poor programming, after SGU had its season finale (and undeservedly also apparently series finale - more on that again below), the programming department at SYFY allowed Sanctuary to air at 10 o'clock with no new lead in whatsoever - so, it became the only new (I use 'new' here to refer to a current series on that network, not a repeat like TNG from many many years ago). Sanctuary has had to stand all alone as the only programming on Monday nights. And, even worse, SYFY has advertised the coming of Eureka, Warehouse and Alphas as the POWERFUL whatevers - soon Monday will have powerful ... I've found that advertising incredibly insulting to the Sanctuary series which - which has had to gain viewers back, helped indeed by the fact that normal network programming on the original networks is over for the summer, but still, as the ONLY series and at 10PM on Mondays is an incredible feat and one that it somehow is actually carrying off. But, SYFY won't notice - and your theory is, in my mind, actual fact and explains very clearly why SGU, a series which had gained in so many ways in its second season - something which many new series sometimes are able to do - and yet, they cancelled it and I don't think ever intended to renew it before the second season began. Whether they did or not is irrelevant, but they should have had much more confidence in the quality of that series and they could surely see how it had found its path -
Your account explains much and, as mentioned already, explains a great deal. SYFY obviously has deaf ears to anything that doesn't fit exactly to their goal. I would, however, find it interesting if somehow, despite the much easier time of summer, if the POWERFUL Monday lineup - especially of Warehouse and the Alphas would fall on their respective ...

  • I agree with Majorsal.

The title of this article is "Without network competition, Sanctuary‘s ratings recover" and it's exactly that, it recovers without competition. It had competition on Fri, and it did even better, I still think that W13 and Eureka could be getting an easy/free ride in the summer when they air the rest of their seasons. If Syfy feels their shows do better on Summer, why didn't Sanctuary air when Summer is here like the other shows?

I either want to see in S4:

    1. The show goes back to it's old time next season.
    2. If it does good for the finale, than it could show that it also works on Mon night in the *summer* time.

Either way, I want it to have a real lead in, not go a whole season without one like it is right now.

  • There are times that I wonder if SyFy is really serious about its shows. They have take every series that they have left that are worth watching and thrown them on the worst night for ratings. Their best ratings night is now dominated by Smackdown and right now American Ninja Warrior is on. WTF??

  • Yea we already knew that the summer schedule is better for the syfy shows. So why didnt syfy keep stargate on the summer schedule? If it was we would still have our stargate !!

    Syfy channel sucks!!!

FYI-BBCA is airing alot of star trek and most recently BSG from the beginning.Hopefully they will pick up reruns of stargate as i refuse to watch anything on syfy.
