After a brief return to the Destiny, Stargate fans must once again bid their intrepid heroes adieu. American Mythology’s “Back To Destiny” series — a 6-part Stargate Universe adventure that debuted last summer — released its final issue on Wednesday.
While technically not canon, “Back to Destiny” is a Stargate story developed under license with MGM. As of now, it’s the closest thing Stargate fans have to a proper resolution to Stargate Universe‘s cliffhanger.
Author Mark Haynes previously told GateWorld: “I think writing SGU in comics was special for me not only because I have a great affinity for the show, but because it gave us the chance to bring a sense of closure that we didn’t get from the television series.”
“SGU was positioned very well at the end of Season Two to engage in some serious, thought-provoking science fiction,” co-author J.C. Vaughn added. “We’ve been fortunate enough to position Destiny and her crew to carry that mission further.”“If we’ve been able to share our love of the show in a professional way with our fellow fans, that would be a win,” Vaughn said.
Haynes and Vaughn’s work will also be featured in the short story collection Stargate Atlantis / Universe Anthology. Issue #2 of the ongoing comic series is also due out this month.
So what’s next for the writing team? Will they revisit the Stargate universe? Well, that remains to be seen — though both writers told GateWorld that this 6-issue comic series could provide “a jumping-off point” for more Stargate stories.
In the meantime, a paperback pulling together all six issues of the “Back To Destiny” story available for pre-order on Amazon (for release on October 9)! Issue #6 goes for $3.99 (USD) at Comixology.
