Is Stargate Leaving Amazon Prime? This Weekend Might Be Your Last Chance to Binge

UPDATE #2: All three Stargate shows are back on Prime, as of September 12. Visit our Where to Watch page to find further updates and current streaming availability in the U.S.

UPDATE #1: At the end of the weekend multiple Amazon Prime users confirm that the three Stargate series are indeed no longer available for streaming with Prime. We’ll keep our eyes open and report any changes.

The original story follows …

Ready for a weekend binge of some of sci-fi’s best?

If you’ve been enjoying the Stargate shows on Amazon Prime Video in the United States, you may be down to your last few days before Stargate SG-1, Atlantis, and Universe depart the streaming service — at least for a while.

All three shows are currently flagged on Prime Video as “leaving Prime on July 20, 2020.” (That’s this coming Monday.) Until them Prime members can watch the shows in their entirety — all 354 episodes — included free with their subscription:

Stargate SG-1 (Seasons 1-10)

Stargate Atlantis (Seasons 1-5)

Stargate Universe (Seasons 1-2)

(Check your local availability if you subscribe to Amazon Prime outside the U.S.)

Stargate Atlantis: “Broken Ties”

It’s common for shows to leave one streaming service or another as their licensing deals with the studios expire. In the past MGM has been known to renew these deals for Stargate at the last minute — so a show might be flagged as leaving the service on a certain date … but then stick around if a renewal deal is struck in time.

So whether the shows will actually be gone on Tuesday isn’t entirely certain.

On Amazon the feature-length films Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum are only available digitally to rent or buy (as of press time), unless you have the STARZ add-on package.

All 17 seasons of the Stargate franchise are also currently streaming on Hulu. If the shows do leave Prime Video that’s likely to be temporary — and you can switch your binge over to Hulu with a $5.99 monthly subscription.

Stargate Universe: “Air, Part 3”

However if you have the choice, Amazon is a better place to watch the earlier years of Stargate SG-1. There the streaming episodes have been remastered with better visuals and a wider, 16:9 aspect ratio (native for the show’s original DVD release). Hulu still has the 4:3, standard-definition edition.

We’ll keep our ear to the ground and let you know if we hear of any changes to Stargate’s availability. Meanwhile you can bookmark our frequently updated Where To Watch? page to see where you can stream Stargate!

  • If you have a Roku device, the Roku channel has, in its Free TV options, the MGM Sci Fi channel. Episodes of SG-1 and SGA are shown weekday evenings, about 7pm - 10:30pm ET, and SGU is shown on Saturday at around 5:15pm ET

  • Stargate episodes have not been available on Amazon Prime in parts of Canada for quite some time.

  • Phew...well, I just completed a binge on SG1, Atlantis and selected eps of Universe, so I'm good for a few months! I am really longing for a new chapter -- and not Origins...which was, sorry, awful.

  • I was literally in the middle of season 4 of SG1 and the next episode went to play and had an error out... I panicked and google lead me here... I'm now sad...

    • I'm in the exact same position, except I was able to get my 7-year old son to start watching it with me, and now I don't have access! Ugh... was finally getting him away from stupid youtube videos so he could watch something with characters and plot...

      • I think we are living parallel lives... My 10 year old son has been really enjoying it. Totally bummed out. We signed up for Hulu for a free month. The problem is that we are on S6 and it is still the low res non-widesreen version at Hulu. Hopefully Amazon and MGM can figure it out within a month. Luckily I already own Atlantis on Bluray.

  • Can confirm that Stargate SG1, Atlantis and Universe have been made unavailable for Prime subs in the USA. Right while I was in the middle of SG1 season 9. :(

    • This is sad to hear. I was in the middle of Atlantis S4, E3 last night. Went to continue this morning while working from home, and was led here after trying to find our wtf happened. Maybe there needs to be some sort of warning on the streaming service when they're going to be ending. If they have it, it was not conspicuous enough for me to notice.

  • I'm so bummed, just bingeing for the past 3 weeks, just started season 4 episode 3. My nightly routine is not the same.

  • I've just had a look on Amazon UK... They've not been available to watch for free through Prime for quite a while, but each season is available to buy (digital copy) for only £4.99 per season, that's SG-1 Atlantis and Universe all for under £85

  • I've been watching this for the past week, you just have to 'subscribe' to the MGM Amazon package, it's $3.99 a month and the first few months are free.

Source: Literally watching it from my App right now.
    *This is for Canada though
