Brad Wright Confirms New Stargate Is (Still) In The Works

A new Stargate TV series is in development at MGM, Brad Wright confirmed today. And it will continue the existing television universe that fans know and love from 10 seasons of Stargate SG-1, five seasons of Stargate Atlantis, and two seasons of Stargate Universe.

But the project has obviously suffered some understandable delays, including those caused by the industry shutdown during the coronavirus pandemic.

Wright talked about the project that he and MGM are still working on in today’s “Ask Me Anything” livestreaming Q&A session, hosted by The Companion’s Lawrence Kao. He kicked off the AMA with his answer to the question he knew everyone was going to ask: Is there going to be a new Stargate TV series?

In response Wright confirmed what we knew previously, and what we suspected has happened to the project in 2020:

I just want everybody to know that MGM and I are working on something. It’s just too early to talk about. And it’s partly too early because there is a pandemic going on. And that’s kind of ground a few things to a halt.

But we are working on something. It’s very exciting. It’s something that we have been talking about for a while now. And I love it — I’m excited to have the possibility of making it someday soon. Or someday, period!

I’ll say this much: It exists in the universe that you already know. It’s not a reboot, it’s not a completely new thing. It’s a continuation. And I’ll leave it at that. I’m not allowed to say anything more! I’m sworn to secrecy.

In the meantime, Wright has also joined The Companion as a contributor and creative consultant. For more from Brad’s keyboard sign up for a free trial subscription now.

In the more than hour-long AMA Wright also answered fan questions about production challenges, revisiting the Aschen, casting his Netflix series Travelers, the cancellation of Firefly, and why it’s almost impossible to shoot an alien planet outdoors in Vancouver today. Naren Shankar (who worked with Wright on The Outer Limits, and today is executive producing The Expanse) showed up to ask Brad if he thinks an anthology series is feasible in today’s TV landscape.

And former Stargate producer and Dark Matter creator Joseph Mallozzi turned up as a surprise guest to ask Brad which episode from his entire career has been the most challenging to produce. (His answer included SG-1‘s “One False Step” and Travelers“17 Minutes” — the latter of which was directed by Amanda Tapping).

Stick with GateWorld for future updates on new Stargate! We’re hoping that 2021 is the year that the studio can cross these hurdles and announce that a new series is going into production.

  • comme disait Jack, c'est là-haut que tout se passe ! Je suis français, et je veux voir cette nouvelle série canon, qui explorera de nouveau les étoiles !

  • lets just hope MGM doesn't go bust from not getting money from the new bond movie, or they sell it too someone who will do right by the franchise

  • Of course, another great show to ruin with a bunch of leftist garbage, turning yet another of the greats into something silly and unwatchable.

      • Do you think science-fiction is reserved SOLELY for left-wingers and liberals? If so, buddy, I disagree, a liberal. Because that's the greater tragedy here. The big corporations are SMOTHERING art to the delighted adulations of gullible *** idiots who can't see their own double standards. For one, you can't FIND good science-fiction, they write it like it's ******* fantasy now, that's what sells the most, and science-fiction should be about humanity, right? The two divisions ARE the problem, but it's highlighted exactly WHY that is when one side is pontificating and lecturing down to another blaming them as the sole reason for division and not themselves. Takes two to fight, you know. I mean, seriously, how often have we seen in recent history a piece of the industry flop because it was made solely to fill in blue checkmarks while the plot and character was just an afterthought? Quite a lot, and then you get called a bigot for that, because it's tailored to so many checkmarks, well, you MUST be a bigot if you hate it. More like it's just so damned poorly written. Science-fiction is too smart for the mindless masses who are the only customers Hollywood cares about now.

      • You can't ESCAPE the culture war when too many big Hollywood corporations smothering art, ironically to cheering adulation from stupid *** idiots, wind up treating story and character and continuity as an afterthought to all the checkmarks they can hit. I say that as somebody who'd like a more egalitarian world, but it goes both ways, you know! They wanna write fantasy or superhero, that's where they should stay, it's what they want, given the poor writing in most visual science-fiction franchises today. Until we have a major paradigm that reshifts the industry, I want them to stay way from it.

  • Do a minseries, tie up loose ends while making something new.
We've waited almost ten years, I mean c'mon!!

    • I would love to see the original SG 1 team back or at least a lot of guest appearances. It would be fun to see what would happen if the gate became public knowledge.
