All this time actors and writers have been thinking that the various unions have been working on their behalf, but they have actually been scamming them. They do not have the writer’s and actor’s best interests in mind… they just want those dues. Imagine paying unions for the right to go broke. You could have gone broke all on your own!

Except the unions are literally keeping the writers in their homes and apartments using strike funds. Clown yourself elsewhere.

So you don’t think writer’s and actors should get paid residuals? That’s what the unions are fighting for.

I really don’t want my beloved Stargate ruined by a half ass ai written story. Wait for the people who love the franchise to be available again, please.

Haha as if Amazon will let those people write Stargate. Whatever Amazon eventually might release, it will be unrecognizable to moat current SG fans.

Exactly! They can’t write entertaining original work amd have done nothing but completely drive into the ground any beloved IPs they have gotten their hands. If they focused less on politics and more on I dunno….writing creative and entertaining works, then maybe most people would care about their plight. I’m just praying that Amazon comes to its senses after the failures of the other original IPs they destroyed and bring in some skilled writers who know, love and respect the original IP for SG.

If only the quality of writing for most movies and shows had not fallen off a massive cliff in the last 5- 8 years. The flops coming out of paramount, Netflix, Amazon and of course Disney as case in point. The writers have successfully destroyed IPs that any idiot could have made profitable. I am all for fair pay in terms of some of the issues around background actors and AI- at least up to a point, but not so much for this recent crop of writing “talent.” In terms of AI, even if SAAG wins this battle, which they… Read more »

How about replacing CEOs and managers with AIs programed for fair play and the Asimov directives?

Whole levels of management will most likely be replaced by AI, not to increase corporate fairness and humanity, but improve efficiency and increase profits.

I would be devastated by an announcement right now, unless it was for a year or two out. I fully support the unions in this, their demands are more than reasonable.

Thank you Darren for your article. I’m a big fan of course and like any other fan (I think) we’ve learned a lot from this series about humanity, tactic, arguments, fairness etc. From cast and crew as well. So totally agree…

This sounds like the plot to Michael Crichton’s underrated film “Looker” (1981). I think this movie needs to be called to the front, and given tons of attention.

“Among the studios’ proposals is what they call a “groundbreaking AI proposal” that, according to SAG’s chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, would allow for background performers to be paid one day’s pay and then have their likeness scanned and used in perpetuity in future projects, without further consent or compensation. “

They already get paid way too Damn much, and the writers wouldn’t know good writing if it slapped them in the face. They’re the reason the industry has lost BILLIONS this past decade and why streaming became so prevalent when you spend nothing but making empty vapid characters to check inclusion boxes and don’t write good characters that happen to be those types of people you’ve lost the war. And frankly this strike is great no more shitty movies wasting my time promising me how good it’ll be just to be empty soulless and worthless. Abolish these unions pay them… Read more »

I for one think this would be an opportunity for Amazon to launch a new show using entirely foreign and non-union workers. Show those greedy fools in the unions that they can not hold the American people and our companies hostage to their unreasonable demands. When the strikes inevitably break, American actors can beg to come on board for actual REASONABLE salaries.

I am astounded on what they want to do to the actors and writers in their AI world, plus greed is taking over, yet again, because mostly, that is what it all boils down to… Maybe the rest of the world should show their feelings about this by boycotting certain things … And SDCC without those wonderful Thespians and Story tellers, felt so sad and I was not even there… They are trying to take away some of the arts we know and love and replace them with a machine. Did these people not watch films like “AI, or I… Read more »

Absolutely agree. And I think that it’s important to say that the actors who are suffering are the jobbing actors, not the stars (although the stars are obviously supporting their fellow thesps). These guys don’t earn much (not enough to qualify for healthcare) and drive around in 10 year old cars, not ferraris. They rely on residuals and the current model sucks. AI could become a form of digital slavery. The fact that someone can own your image and voice and then march you around a screen like a marionette in the project of their choice (up to and including… Read more »

How about instead of worrying about residuals they just go make more content and get paid on a regular basis like the rest of us. If I go do a job I don’t get paid for the job I did 5 years from now. So why should they? More work more money simple
