Amazon is making good on its promise to make the Stargate franchise available to more viewers, after acquiring Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer last year. All three shows are available to stream on Prime Video (at least in the U.S.), and now Amazon has added a live Stargate channel to its ad-supported service “Freevee.”
“Stargate by MGM” is one of a dozen new channels added from MGM, with Stargate episodes airing in order 24 hours a day. Fans can tune in via the Freevee mobile app or in a Web browser — just click on “Live TV” and scroll down to find the Stargate channel.
These are 16:9 widescreen episodes, streaming in standard definition. Each hour currently includes around 10 minutes of ads (less than on broadcast television).
The shows are not available for free on demand, however. Searching for SG-1, Atlantis, or Stargate Universe will bring users to Amazon’s Prime Video search results, where each season of the franchise is available on demand with a Prime subscription.
Freevee’s live channel matches the offering at Pluto TV, which launched its own 24/7 Stargate channel in 2022.
Pluto also offers episodes on demand with ads, allowing viewers to pick an episode rather than tuning in to whatever happens to be on the live channel.
Stargate’s movies — the original 1994 feature film, The Ark of Truth, and Continuum — are more of a mixed bag for viewers without a Prime subscription. None of the films are currently available on Pluto TV, while as of press time Amazon is offering the feature-length cut of the 2018 Web series Stargate Origins for free with ads.
Prime Video subscribers today can find the original feature film included in Prime, along with The Ark of Truth. Continuum is available to rent for $3.99.
Do we really have to pay for a subscription?
I’m sick of this unfairness, the US isn’t all the places in the world…
Maybe not, but I believe it has the most couch potatoes.
Yes thisii very true because I’m One of them 😆👍
hope that making a “stargate by mgm” channel doesn’t mean that there will be a « «stargate by amazon » which will be different and non-canon (no reboot please!)
