Sarkalov maintained the program for only a matter of weeks before dialing a planet with a gate sunken beneath an ocean and were unable to disconnect the wormhole. His base came under threat when aquatic alien lifeforms traveled through the gate and invaded the bodies of several Russian officers.
As the men under his command panicked and began shooting one another, Colonel Sarkalov activated the Extreme Measures protocol -- disconnecting the D.H.D. from the gate and releasing a dead nerve gas into the facility. He is believed to have perished there.
In an attempt to escape the gas, the possessed men still alive at the end of the killing spree returned through the Stargate to the submerged world, killing the humans once the life forces left their bodies.
