RETIREMENT:
As Stargate SG-1 passed its fifth season, Richard Dean Anderson more and more frequently talked “retirement,” “semi-retirement,” and “as retired as a workaholic can be.” He expressed a desire to spend time with his young daughter at home in California, as well as his dislike of the grind of a long-running TV series. But the show kept getting renewed!
Rick took off a few episodes in Season Six, and even more time off in Season Seven. By Season Eight he had one foot out the door, with Jack O’Neill promoted to base commander and rarely stepping off-world any more. Though he would return for numerous guest appearances, the 2004 would be his last year with the cast.
I left the show specifically to be with, at the time, my six year-old daughter. She was in great need of having my presence in her life.
