A Tok’ra archaeologist arrives at the S.G.C. with newly discovered technology, giving the SG-1 team superhuman powers — and a dangerous mission to destroy Apophis’ new prototype warship.
“Upgrades” Facts:
- “Upgrades” signals the introduction of a new Tok’ra character: Anise / Freya, played by actress Vanessa Angel (and nicknamed “Tok’ra Barbie” by fans).
- Freya gave us an example of a Tok’ra and her host who don’t always feel as one: it would later be revealed that the host was interested in Jack O’Neill, while the symbiote preferred Daniel Jackson.
- For the gate travel nerds among us: It was this episode that established that an object exits the wormhole at the same velocity it entered on the other side.
- The distinctive visual effect of the team running into Goa’uld force shields was accomplished using saran wrap on set, later to be augmented with digital sparkles.
- Written by freelancer David Rich, “Upgrades” was originally quite serious in tone. Producer Robert C. Cooper ended up doing a significant rewrite on the script, making it the episode we loved.

great episode! :D
I liked this episode. Jack’s reaction to who the Tok’ra was when she arrived was funny.
This was a very good ep one of the few I actually liked that had the Tok’ra in it. I loved the end where they were all apologizing to Hammond and Teal’c says “I have no need to apologize”
The “Tok’ra Barbie” reaction makes sense: All the Tok’ra we’ve seen (except for Jakob) wear robes. Jakob’s clothing makes sense, as he generally runs around as an operative. But here comes Anise, with her skintight suit, obviously in an attempt to pull in more male viewers :)
