Stargate Movie Memorabilia Auction Coming February 15

For collectors looking to acquire some classic Stargate memorabilia, VIP Fan Auctions has a major event on the horizon.

On February 15 the auction house will open up bidding on a variety of items from the original Stargate film. Currently listed in the preview announcement are Ra’s mask, the Horus Guard helmet, a set of cauldron stands, and several other iconic props and costumes.

The auction will run for one week, until February 22, with items coming from writer-producer Dean Devlin’s personal collection.

“The mythology of Stargate has endured for 25 years thanks to a timeless story, groundbreaking special effects, and legions of passionate fans,” said Mark Kaminky, a managing partner at VIP Fan Auctions. “[We’re] proud to bring these rare collectibles to fans of Stargate.”

Before making a purchase, however, fans should be aware of some important distinctions. There are three separate kinds of memorabilia listed in the previews: screen-used, production models, and reproductions.

Screen-used indicates a prop’s appearance in the 1994 film itself. This is a piece of Stargate history that actually appeared on screen.

Production model means that the prop is an original — made and used by the movie’s production — but one that may not have made it to screen. It might have served as a backup, or maybe reference model.

Reproductions are props that look and feel 100 percent authentic, but have been recreated based on the original designs — and in some cases the very same molds that were used to build the original, screen-used prop. These were not used by the production, and they did not exist during the filming of the original movie.

But then again, that doesn’t discount how awesome they look.

VIP Fan Auctions is a “post-production asset management” company that works with studios to preserve props and costumes once their productions have wrapped — materials that would otherwise be destroyed. They carefully package these artifacts to be sold (or re-used) at a later date.

Now it seems they’re ready to distribute some of their Stargate gems — 25 years after Stargate arrived in movie theaters.

Stargate was written by filmmaking duo Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, and directed by Emmerich for its October 1994 release. The movie starred Kurt Russell and James Spader as Col. Jack O’Neil and Dr. Daniel Jackson, respectively.

Its box office success paved the way for three live-action television series, two direct-to-DVD movies, and countless ancillary properties that continue to this day.
