Here’s Proof That Brad Wright’s New Stargate Script Exists

Fans who have been waiting for a morsel of information regarding Brad Wright’s fourth in-canon Stargate series can rejoice at this small (but exciting) tease at what could soon be the in works … if Amazon gives it the green light.

Joseph Mallozzi – who was a long-time writer and producer on Stargate SG-1, Atlantis, and Universe – has shared the title page of Brad Wright’s Stargate pilot on social media, with the caption “a little light reading ahead of the weekend.”

Mallozzi seems to have edited the page to obscure part of the show’s title, Stargate: _______. Or, perhaps Wright himself has yet to decide on the show’s full name and left the text box as a placeholder to fill in later.

For anyone who wants to wager a guess as to what might be in mind for the show’s title, John S on Twitter noted that “with the font and size of the box, it would be 7 letters.” Another fan noted “Stargate: Legacy” would be one possibility that fits the space.

In any case, let the guessing games begin!

Even David Hewlett, who played Dr. Rodney McKay on Stargate Atlantis, also joined in on the fun. He scribbled in “McKay” over the blank text box, saying, “I fixed the cover page for you @bradtravelers… it’s okay, consider it a gift.”

As exciting as this is, it’s important to remember two things. First, the show does not have the green light yet, and there is no guarantee that Amazon will ultimately choose to go with Wright’s pitch for a new series. And, second, if Amazon does pick up this series it may be awhile until it reaches our television screens.

When a fan asked how long the process could take, Mallozzi responded: “Depends on Amazon. If they green light the show, say, next week, Brad could get a writers’ room up and running by May. Some scripts written for top of summer, head into production in the back half of this year, start dropping new #Stargate episodes summer of 2023. Give or take.”

In a corresponding blog post Mallozzi added optimistically: “Are we about to lock that elusive sixth chevron? Maybe. You know what would really, really help? Letting Amazon know you’re looking forward to Brad Wright’s new Stargate series.”

Mallozzi’s “sixth chevron” comment hearkens back to his Reddit comment back in 2020, where he fielded a question about the status of Brad Wright’s potential new Stargate series. “Someone asked me how many chevrons have been locked. I told them five,” Mallozzi said.

Brad Wright first announced that he was “talking with MGM” about Stargate during an appearance at 2018’s Gatecon fan convention. Then in early 2019 he reiterated on the “Nerks of the Hub” fan podcast that he was actively working with the studio on a new show.

Wright later revealed that his new Stargate pitch would see the Stargate program now revealed to the public, and would take place in the present day. And he confirmed it would include appearances from legacy cast members of SG-1 and Atlantis (at least) – all while introducing new characters and pushing the franchise forward in a new direction.

The potential fourth Stargate series has been on the slow train in part because of the COVID-19 pandemic. “I wrote a pilot for [MGM] and the timing could not have been worse in terms of delivery,” Wright told Bleeding Cool, “because the pandemic hit pretty much as I was typing the end.” The future of his proposed fourth series suddenly became uncertain, as studios around the world tightened their purses, and struggled to restart film and television productions safely.

Then, in May of 2021, Amazon announced that it was buying up Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and all of its assets — including the Stargate franchise. That created a further degree of uncertainty for Brad Wright’s fourth series, as the changing of the guard could see a shift in the studio’s creative strategy – or a lengthy acquisition process during which plans for the Stargate franchise would remain in limbo.

But now, less than a year later, Amazon’s acquisition of MGM is complete, and the studio is free to press ahead with a Stargate movie or series for their streaming service, Amazon Prime Video.

As recently as February Wright made it clear that he was unaware of Amazon and MGM’s intentions regarding Stargate. But he seems eager to jump back into the captain’s chair of a new Stargate series, should they give him the green light.

With any luck – and a bit of lobbying from the fans – we may yet see a new Stargate series grace our television screens within the next few years.

Are you interested in seeing Brad Wright’s fourth Stargate series – or would you like to see Amazon take Stargate in a different direction? Maybe you have a guess about the full show title that Brad has in mind?

  • Stargate was left to rest in peace a long time ago, dragging on the false hope the show will ever be revived is cruel and foolhardy

  • Yeh... Even as a lover of Stargate, i am really annoyed by all those theories presented as facts since almost a decade now. You guys have nothing else than expectations and fallacious reasoning around things like wind, but presented as facts than a new show will happen at some point.

Wait for it, and if something happen, it will. After 10 years of fans praying / calling / petitioning for it, i think it's clear if something happen, it will be because of other reasons than fanbase, even if they present it as it for people.

I would love to have a new stargate series, but i think it's pretty clear the current era around SNS or reboots forced trough woke / quotas / SJW would ruin it.

    • I too supported a revival of stargate monetarily and I was upset nothing came of it. I thought fan support could conquer all but apparently not. If this new show doesn't do well in ratings there will be nothing we fans can do about it and we'll lose the war before we've even had a chance to do battle.
I'm glad we get something at least and it hasn't even been THAT long since our last stargate content. I just wish they revive the Asgard somehow...

  • Why does it need to be a straight continuation of the other 3 series based on Earth? Why couldn't it be based on a completely different planet with fresh ideas? Stargate Universe wasted an ideal opportunity to venture into new worlds and technologies, by basing it mainly on the link between Earth & Destiny. Over 2 full seasons, there was only really one new alien race introduced, with most of the storyline revolving around the drama of the crew members and the Lucien Allience.

    • Brad's script is not a straight continuation, it's just set in the same universe. It will involve a new team with some of the characters from legacy shows dropping in - that's how he and Joe Mallozzi have described it. It will pick up between the time the shows ended and present day and they'll explain what happened to all the previous characters is my guess.

  • Oui oui oui Stargate !!!!

  • The time is right for new Stargate. In fact, it is way OVERDUE. The premise of the Stargate being public opens up so many avenues and potential twists/turns. I am so excited and am keeping my fingers crossed. Also, Amazon needs to make it free to Prime Video members too. I need a Stargate fix…

  • I would be happy with a continuation of what is already in stargate, since Brad Wright is still interested in the works.

  • if Netflix doesn't green light this Now I will unsub. Stargate ip in Brads hands is guaranteed gold INDEED

  • Mallozi knows he'll have a payroll if Wright's involved, so he's trying to get people onboard for a new Wright series, not a new Stargate (in generic terms). The problem is that both Mallozi and Wright already "failed" with SG1's ending (the Ori arch made no sense), the Atlantis development, and Universe altogether. Ratings are proof. Therefore, in my humble opinion, the best is for the franchise to be given to somebody else. Everything Mallozi and Wright currently do have a 90's feel. It's ok, but the world has moved on. As a TV rep myself, I have strong doubts that they'd be able to do something to hook-in new generations and senior fans alike. Ratings of their newest shows are proof of this too.

Big sci-fi hits nowadays have fresh names onboard. Well-known names who are in turn new to the franchise (like Star Wars and Star Trek). Stargate probably needs the same. A talented, well-known writer/director/producer with FRESH ideas, and without the "burden" of having to tie-in the past shows - which could potentially alienate many new viewers who wouldn't know a thing of the show's past. Similar thing happened to HIMYM. The creators attempted to made the "mother" version and it resulted very cliche and boring, even after two pilots were shot. Solution: the series was handled to somebody else. And now it's succeeding in Hulu.

We could even use Stargate as an example! Everybody agrees that Emmerich did a good job, but also that Wright (and Glassner, especially) brought a new and fresh mythology. So why can't this happen again? Why can't we have a new Emmerich or a new Wright? We shouldn't be afraid of change. I think Amazon's wisest decision would be to pick a pitch from somebody else (considering, of course, it's better than Wright's). I'm sure that there are dozens of writers and producers typing some Stargate lines right now. It's a huge opportunity and kind of a safe bet. They'll just have to go with the script that is most innovative. To live from the past we already have the past.

    • I completely disagree. If anything the 'new names' have made a mess of established properties. Star Trek and Star Wars have been rejected by a significant number of fans. Alot of people are tired of the 'creatives' trying to reinvent the wheel. I'd give alot to get a decent sci-fi show with a 90's feel nowadays.

    • If by "fresh ideas" you mean "#### franchises by cramming down everyone's throat forced diversity, feminism and turning everything into a pseudo-neo-liberal propaganda manifest" then I agree with you.

I seriously hope they let Stargate rest. It will never ever be like it was. Star Wars, Star Trek, LOTR, they are destroying everything with unoriginal massively politicised trash

    • "As a TV rep myself..." and that's where you lost us all.
The last thing we want to do is to take advice from someone embedded in the current, creatively bankrupt entertainment industry and its ongoing failure to revive classic Sci Fi series and retain their fan-bases.
That entire argument of "something FRESH" is exactly what led to so many long time fans walking away from Star Wars, Star Trek, Dr Who etc. Going with "somebody else" is the opposite of a "safe bet" because you instantly risk losing the existing StarGate fanbase which is needed to help seal the deal. Star Wars was all but dead in the water till they let Star Wars fans take over with TV Shows that successfully homage the past content. Star Trek made massive U-Turns every season to try and win back the classic fanbase and went so far as to bring back TNG actors and Patrick Stewart for a fan-homage/continuation show (and even that has struggled to make good, due to its pathetic insistence on "fresh ideas".)
This TV rep's arguments and thinking are exactly what has caused all these reboots and revivals to fail so woefully. A "safe bet" would actually be to do the opposite of what this commenter suggests and the opposite of what Star Wars, Trek and Who all did.

"To live from the past we already have the past" sounds a little bit too much like the failed Star Wars' "let the past die, kill it if you have to" (not to mention being grammatically nonsensical).
Chances are a revival is going to be terrible no matter what. due to interference from reps like this commenter, but please, Amazon, try and give it as much of a decent shot as possible and let the past caretakers of the franchise call the shots. Please.

      • Totally agree.

People aren't fans of Franchises because they want "something different" from what it is.

Yes, "fresh ideas" are needed, but you get those by letting the people who ran the franchise before or were at least integral parts of it run it (Tapping comes to mind, she was executive Producer of Sanctuary and 19 Episodes of Motherland: Fort Salem) and let them hire new writers who bring new Ideas.

But the decisionmaker needs to be someone who actually knows and likes the Franchise, not m##### like Kurtsman(or is it Kurtzman? Can't remember the spelling and he isn't worth spending the seconds to find out...).

Sadly Amazon will probably run this into the ground, they are already doing it to LoTR - from what I hear it will get great praise from "Progressives" who then won't watch it (but praise the "inclusiveness"...).

  • I really wish it was like stargate universe but a team of four they get transported to the future and they find out earth has been destroyed and now this team has to become a family and survive in an unfriendly galaxy with enemies at every turn.
