Episode of the Week: ‘Revelations’

SG-1: Season Five
First Aired: May 17, 2002

SG-1 must come to the rescue of their once-powerful allies when the Goa’uld attack a secret Asgard laboratory.

“Revelations” Facts:

  • There were a number of significant “revelations” in this episode. After Anubis had tormented SG-1 from the shadows and through for most of the season, here we get to see his oil-slick face for the very first time.
  • We also learned in this episode that the Asgard are dying. After millennia of reproduction by cloning, they have lost the ability to bear offspring — and now their clones are suffering diminishing returns. It’s a plot point that would finally lead to the Asgard’s self-imposed extinction in the series finale, “Unending.”
  • The Asgard scientist Heimdall is the show’s first full-realized, computer-generated character (with all due respect to the likes of the Reetou “Mother” in Season Two’s “Show and Tell”). Previous Asgard characters were entirely animatronic puppets — which explains why we see Heimdall walk across the room, whereas Thor had always been confined to a chair.
  • Heimdall was voiced by Teryl Rothery (“Janet Fraiser”), who also provided the motion-capture performance for the character. She wore an outfit with a picture of an Asgard on her front, prompting her cast-mates to interact with Heimdall by looking at her chest.
  • The episode ends the show’s fifth season on a rare note: no cliffhanger. Since it was the final episode to air on Showtime the producers decided to give those viewers something of a conclusion.

  • I remember watching this episode for the first time. It was crazy to hear all that stuff regarding the Asgard. I really enjoyed the ending where Anubis and Co run off when confronted with three newer Asgard warships.
