Stream Now With Prime: Stargate Origins: Catherine (2018)

It’s been a long time since new Stargate graced our television screens, but now fans have a chance to catch up on the efforts to jump-start the franchise in 2018.

Stargate Origins: Catherine is now available to watch for free in the U.S. with a subscription to Amazon Prime Video.

The film tells the story of a young Catherine Langford (Ellie Gall), whose father (played by Connor Trinneer) first discovered the Stargate buried near Giza, Egypt, in 1928. Now Catherine is a young woman, whose world is turned upside down when a Nazi scientist named Wilhelm Brücke (Aylam Orian) kidnaps her father and takes him through the Stargate.

The project was originally released as a 10-part Web series, exclusive to subscribers at MGM’s official Web site StargateCommand.co. It was released over the course of three weeks in February and March of 2018, then recut as a single feature-length movie (with a few added visuals). Stargate Origins: Catherine was then sold via digital storefronts starting in June of that year.

The project carries the subtitle “Catherine” because it was intended to be the first of multiple series created for the Web. Fan reception was somewhat cold, due in part to the lower budget and the lack of ties to the long-running TV universe. MGM appears to have opted not to make any more “Origins” series (at least for now), shifting gears instead to developing a project from Stargate SG-1, Atlantis, and Universe co-creator Brad Wright. (Stargate Command itself was subsequently closed, at the end of 2019.)

Because Stargate Origins was only available online, and behind a pay wall, the project flew under the radar for a lot of Stargate’s long-time viewers. Anecdotally we’ve heard several people say over the past two and a half years that they had only just found Stargate Origins and had not heard about it while it was streaming on Stargate Command.

Our take: Origins is a fun romp, taken for what it is and the resources that the crew had available to them. Watching the feature cut all at once definitely makes for a better viewing experience. If you haven’t seen it this way before, or if you’re just looking for another excuse to go through the gate, check it out now on Amazon Prime! • I thought Origins was OK. I have no desire to watch it a second time, but it was fine for what it was-- a way to kill 90 minutes. Low budgets don't bother me, but I can see why some have issues with that aspect.

I think the Origin idea has merit-- how did Bra'tak come to realize the Gou'ould weren't gods? How about a movie on the Egyptian uprising against Apophis? Perhaps a movie or two on the ancients at Atlantis, the Universe ship, etc. The problem was that it was a story that just doesn't excite me, and then they had to do back-flips to keep it in continuity.

  • This movie is listed in Amazon Prime Video, but there is a note that says "This video is currently unavailable to watch in your location." I'm in the US, and I'm an Amazon Prime subscriber.

  • This very very bad effort should not have the name Stargate near.it. Year after year we had top quality science fiction shows called Stargate. What an absolute insult by MGM to put this crap out there and call it Stargate. Obviously MGM don't give a toss about Stargate. They hate Stargate fans and wish we just all go away and stop pestering them all the time asking for more Stargate, well you know what MGM us Stargate fans aren't going away infact we wish you would just go away. It's well documented there are other options for Stargate without MGM. So for crying out loud do the decent thing and sell the franchise or at least lease it.

  • Not on prime as of 8pm ET Sept 7 2020. Hopefully it's coming soon and this article jumped the gun a bit.

    • Read Darren's commentary above, takes some work on roku, but there is a working entry, just be specific on the search so you get both entries to choose from

  • Watching it on Prime in the US right now.

It's ok. I like watching a lot of fan-made sci-fi and fantasy that gets funded on Kickstarter and Indigogo and stuff like that, and I'd put this in that category. I know this was made by MGM, but putting aside the meta information, it's enjoyable for what it is. Certainly not as high quality as any prior Stargate, but not a crime or anything.

  • Personally not interested in paying for another streaming service on a series that seems to have totally bombed. Paying for 2 too many already, cable with internet and Netflix aka netflops. Use to be able to turn the tube on and watch TV for FREE with the same amount(sometimes less) of commercials. All about the money money money. Sometimes, back then, commercials were better then the show or movie, didn't keep showing the same lame ones over & over for months at a time. So over stargate and the endless talk about restarting it without ignition. MGM can keep it, I'll tune in on the next big success instead of holding my breath for that.
