Tweet Event! Stargate Fans Are Rallying Amazon and MGM For A Revival

Stargate fans will be spending this week doing a lot more than celebrating the 25th anniversary of Stargate SG-1. We’ll also be looking ahead, and petitioning Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and the studio’s new owner Amazon for a new Stargate television series.

The latest “tweet event” organized by fans of the franchise will focus on flooding Amazon and MGM with positive Stargate messages this Wednesday, July 27. That’s 25 years since “Children of the Gods” first made its debut on Showtime in the United States … and more than 11 years since our screens went dark on Stargate Universe.

Those who wish to participate on Twitter or across all of social media should use the familiar hashtag #WeWantStargate. Organizer Sebastian (@Le_mediavore) encourages you to add other hashtags as you see fit, and to tag these key Twitter accounts Amazon, MGM, Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke, and Amazon CEO Andy Jassy:

The magic hour to concentrate maximum tweetage is Wednesday at 1 p.m. Pacific time. That’s 4 p.m. Eastern, 8 p.m. GMT, 9 p.m. British Summer Time, and 10 p.m. in Paris.

Ongoing tweets throughout the day are of course helpful, too! Unless past fan campaigns that focus on maximizing participation in an hour-long “tweet storm,” this campaign is billed as a “tweet event” that fans should feel encouraged to join whenever is convenient for them.

The December 2019 event was organized by fans with help from former Stargate writer and executive producer Joseph Mallozzi. It saw wide participation from the Stargate fan community, as well as actors and production crew associated with the franchise. The hashtag trended globally on Twitter.

Mallozzi said that he is supporting this week’s tweet event as well, though this time around he is not an organizer.

Amazon announced that its deal to acquire all of MGM — including the Stargate franchise — for $8.45 billion closed back in March. Since then both parties have been radio silent about the future of Stargate, despite the fact that Brad Wright (who co-created all three television series) has a pilot script for a new show ready to go.

Fans should keep their message to Amazon and MGM positive and respectful, demonstrating that the Stargate fan base is still alive and (very) active all these years later. Consider attaching a Stargate image, and share what you love most about Stargate.

We would also like to see not just any old Stargate, but a continuation of the existing TV canon from Brad Wright. It’s the canon that connects us all to Stargate. This is a rich universe filled with so many stories still to be told, with familiar and beloved characters, and millions of fans around the globe who are ready for a revival.
