Episode of the Week: ‘The Nox’

SG-1: Season One
First Aired: September 12, 1997

Pressed by the government to acquire new technologies, SG-1 is led to a world inhabited by a seemingly primitive race. When Apophis arrives, SG-1 ambushes him … with disastrous consequences.

Special Programming Note! We’ll be off next week for the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday. Happy Gating!

“Enigma” Facts:

  • Armin Shimerman (Anteaus) becomes the first main cast member from a Star Trek TV series to appear on Stargate. He would be followed by Rene Auberjonois, Marina Sirtis, Colm Meaney, Jolene Blalock, Connor Trinneer, and John Billingsley.
  • “The Nox” marks the first time that the team members die, shot dead by Apophis. (In this case, they are revived by the advanced medicine / technology of the Nox.) It will be far from the last time … especially for Daniel!
  • The Nox are the first-ever humanoid alien race encountered by SG-1 that does not seem to originate from Earth. They are very old, having been allied with the Ancients before that race departed our galaxy millions of years ago.
  • The Nox really just want to be left alone. In fact, Lya (guest star Frida Betrani) is the only member of the species we’ll ever see again on the show — later in Season One (“Enigma”), and again in Season Three (“Pretense”).
  • The alien creature being hunted by both SG-1 and Apophis — the Fenri — is one of those sci-fi inventions that works great for the TV show on a budget. The creature has the power to become invisible (and spends pretty much the whole episode invisible — convenient for your CGI budget!) … or rather, as the team learns, the Nox shield the animal with invisibility.

  • Well it was the first season and for a first season show it was now bad. Great music, introduction to a race we didn't get to see more of unfortunately and everybody died.

  • I liked this episode. I always found the "hair" of the nox to be very odd. Looking back, I wish we could've learned more about them and their place in the great alliance.

Also, I thought it would've been touching in the episode where the nox woman comes back for the Tolan triad, if they asked how the kid and dad were doing.

  • I always liked this episode. Such contrast between the Nox and the Goa'uld. Really puts the Galaxy in perspective. Also is that the first official death of Daniel Jackson?

  • Daniel's first death, was on the original feature film (thou, tbh i'm not certain if he was dying). I know he used a Goa'uld sarcophagus in the movie.
