Episode of the Week: ‘Nemesis’

SG-1: Season Three
First Aired: March 10, 2000

SG-1 faces creatures of mass destruction that even the Asgard can’t control, and must destroy Thor’s infested vessel before the Replicator bugs reach Earth.

“Nemesis” Facts:

  • The third season finale is the first episode to feature the creepy-crawly mechanical spiders, the Replicators. The fact that the Asgard had “an enemy worse than the Goa’uld” in their home galaxy was mentioned by Thor earlier this season, in “Fair Game.” The Replicators would return many times, of course, being established as a long-time, primary antagonist for both SG-1 and Atlantis.
  • Despite the fact that this is the big season finale, “Nemesis” has one of the show’s shortest guest cast lists. Since most of the episode takes place with the main cast alone on the Beliskner, only three guest actors appear: Colin Cunningham (Major Davis), Gary Jones (Walter Harriman), and Guyle Lee-Fraizer (Technician).
  • This episode sees the start of Jack O’Neill’s long-expressed desire to take the team (… and particularly Sam Carter) fishing. The dream would finally be realized at the close of Season Eight (“Threads,” “Moebius, Part 2”).
  • Daniel was originally scripted to go along with the team for this mission. The character’s surgery was written in to accommodate actor Michael Shanks, who came down with appendicitis at the time of filming.
  • Shanks wasn’t entirely sidelined by his (and Daniel’s) surgery, however: He also provides the voice of Thor.

  • Any episode with Asgard was a favorite of mine. One thing that stood out after watching this episode again was how the bugs reconstituted themselves at first but never again after being shot with bullets.

  • @Steve, I think that is why SG-1 had so much success. The replicators evolved to defend against Asgard tech, not more primitive tech.
