The GateWorld Podcast returns for 2010! In our first show of the new year, Darren and David are weighing in on the first half of Stargate Universe‘s premiere season. Now that we’ve seen 10 episodes, what do we think of the show? Who are the stand-out characters? Is the balance right between character drama and plot-driving action? How well does SGU carry on the Stargate legacy, and how is it doing judged solely on its own merits?

We’ll also hear from listeners on the topic of SGU So Far, and other topics in Listener Mail.

  • Great podcast guys, it certainly wasn't one sided. You raised some good points that those who dislike SGU have been trying to get across aswell as giving a fair opinion on your likes/dislikes. I hope that we don't get people saying that your being to positive.

I also hope that the comments on this don't get out of hand like they have been on articles in the past.

I do like SGU but regardless of what anyone says I don't believe that it’s the best thing since sliced bread, there are some aspects that need to be improved upon but as a whole I have been enjoying it.

They do need to cut down on the use of the communication stones and introduce an alien race (which looks likely to happen in the next episode). From what I have read the 2nd half of season 1 will have more of those sci-fi elements that some people have been saying that the first half lacked.

The ‘sex’ hasn’t bothered me as to be honest out of the 10 episode thus far it has taken up like what: 90-120 seconds? Some would have you believe that SGU is a soft core porno. In my opinion they couldn’t be more wrong. The ‘sex scenes’ I would give at most a rating of 12, they really have been blown way out of proportion.

I agree with you that the first half of season 1 was like setting up the pieces of a chessboard. That board has now been set and so the pace really should pick up in the 2nd half.

I quote from David Blue “Ep 11 of SGU will excite the fans of previous SGs. Hell, it'll excite everyone! But the old/previous fans will LOVE it. All I'm sayin”

Whether or not you choose to believe David Blue on those words is your choice, I personally cannot wait to see ‘Space’ when SGU returns in April.

I have said this in the past but hope that they take notice this time: everyone is entitled to there opinion whether it’s positive or negative but there really should not be a problem with being tactful & constructive, I sincerely hope that were past the stage of just pure hateful comments.

  • I agree completely with Tanith's comments, though I'm perhaps even more positive about SGU. I was really annoyed when SG1 was cancelled - esp after they had successfully established new characters on an existing series - something often impossible to achieve. But, I never even considered blaming Atlantis. More than enough said. I also can hardly wait to see SPACE when SGU returns. And there are several characters on the ship,David Blue included, who seem to get better every episode.

  • SG1 ran for 10 years and it was not cancelled because of Atlantis so there is absolutely no need to blame Atlantis. Atlantis on the other hand had loads of potential to continue the franchise but it was cut short because the ptb wanted SGU, but this is all old news and I'm really sick of it now.
SGU is not Stargate and never will be for me and David Blue has no idea what old fans want. He doesnt realise that its not just about aliens or explosions as so many love to quote, its about the characters and I have no interest in any of the SGU characters and never will. They can change the show all they want and it won't make any difference to me. I couldn't care less what happens to any of them. The level of negativity against SGU is a good indication of how unappealing the show is. As a fan of the franchise for 15 years I will continue to voice my displeasure at how horrible SGU is and what a terrible decision it was to cancel SGA for a show that has nothing of what made the franchise great. If there was something original about SGU and it had dynamic and interesting characters I could probably accept the new direction, but for me the show has no redeeming qualities at all.

  • Also really glad podcasts are back! Thanks guys.
@Tanith, I know you mean well but in *all* your post you have to comment about people's negative comments and frankly that is becoming tiresome too (remember all those posts in email lists way back who had to comment about people's mail being OT and then comments about that...). Ooops, now I'm one of those :)

  • @daxmaryrussel I apologise for doing that but I'm just tired of the endless argument and would like to try and avoid it and have a reasonable adult discussion for once. I'm even trying to mention things I would like to see improved to kind of meet on common ground.

@blackhawlk fair enough, SGU isn't for everyone.
