“It’s your Stargate …”
We’re just one week away from the start of the Stargate Rewatch, a massive and community-wide project to watch all 17 seasons of Stargate from the beginning — one season every month through 2012. (Read more here.)
This week we’re revving up the engines with a little Stargate Prewatch! On deck for your viewing pleasure any time during this final week of July is the original 1994 feature film Stargate, starring Kurt Russell as Jack O’Neil and James Spader as Daniel Jackson.
Stargate was written and produced by Dean Devlin and his Centropolis Films, and directed by Roland Emmerich for a modest budget of $55 million. It was a moderate hit at the box office when it was released in October, and Devlin and Emmerich would go on to greater fame by releasing such movies as Independence Day, Godzilla, The Day After Tomorrow, 10,000 BC, and 2012. The studio made a deal with MGM to help distribute the movie, in exchange giving MGM rights to the Stargate franchise and (to their chagrin) paving the way for a TV series three years later.
Things to watch for in the movie:
- Which characters later appeared on the television series, played by the same actor? (We can think of two.)
- Which characters appeared played by a different actor? (At least five.)
- Which actors appeared on any of the television series as a different character? (At least two.)
On GateWorld:
- Forum: Talk about the movie with thousands of fans from around the world!
- Podcast: Darren and David discuss the feature film
- Movie Guide: Facts and figures, and quotes from the cast and crew
- Interview: Erick Avari (“Kasuf”)
- Video Interview: Alexis Cruz (“Skaara”)
- Gallery: Production photos from the movie
- Gallery: Nearly 2,000 high-quality screen captures
- Amazon: Buy the new 15th anniversary edition on Blu-ray
Remember: the point of the Rewatch is not just to watch everything again, but to watch it together as a fan community! So post your thoughts on your blog, on Twitter (hastag: #SGRewatch), Facebook, or over at GateWorld Forum. Write a new piece of fanfic to go along with what you’re watching, create a new piece of art, chat it up on your podcast — whatever your creative outlet is! Be sure to post a link so we can see it and share it with other Stargate fans.
Get those DVDs ready … We’ll see you back here next Monday to officially kick off the Rewatch with SG-1 Season One!
Is the only way to watch the movie(legally) via DVD? Is it online somewhere?
You can rent it on Amazon Video on Demand.
@bluewater1 Thanks!
There are plenty of links online. For legally you have netflix(via mail), Amazon as mentioned above, if your a comcast customer with HBO you can watch it online at http://xfinitytv.comcast.net/movies/Stargate/6188/full-movie finally, if you have cable service or satellite don’t forget to check the ondemand feature to see if Stargate Movie is available being that it’s an old movie it should be free to watch.
which edition will we be watching? The theatrical or the directors cut?
for that matter, which version of COTG are we going to watch next?
The edition is always, of course, viewer’s choice.
We have several viewing options listed on the Rewatch page. Hope it helps!
I like to watch SG 1 and Atlantis together after the eight season. First SG 1 and then Atlantis because the continuity works great. We start with Weir’s last day at the SGC and continue with Rising, and that way it goes until SG 1 ends.
My correction on renting it on Amazon – Looks like you have to buy it for $6.49.
I would very much love to talk about the big Stargate Rewatch on the forum. Only problem is, the forum has been completely f***ed for the better part of a month. o_o
Please fix it.
@Billz – it seems the forum works now… at least from my end. Have another go!
Same Actor: Erick Avari (“Kasuf”) & Alexis Cruz (“Skaara”)
New Actor: Jack O’Neil, Daniel Jackson, Sha’re, Feretti, Kowalski,
New Character: Richard Kind, French Stewart
Did I miss anyone?
Also, I really want to hear Darren and David do a commentary on Emancipation. Let’s all vote for that episode.
@iMenchi: you missed Catherine Langford, Sara O’Neill & Ra ;)
Don’t forget Professor Langford! We seen him in the first few minutes of the film and in flashbacks in Torment of Tantalus :)
Which characters later appeared on the television series, played by the same actor?
Kasuf (Erick Avari), Skaara (Alexis Cruz)
Which characters appeared played by a different actor?
Jack O’Neil(l) (Kurt Russell-Richard Dean Anderson), Daniel Jackson (James Spader-Michael Shanks), Charles Kawalsky (John Diehl-Jay Acovone), Louis Fer(r)etti (French Stewart-Brent Stait), Catherine Langford (Viveca Lindfors-Elizabeth Hoffman)
Which actors appeared on any of the television series as a different character? French Stewart (Louis Feretti-Andrew Covel), Richard Kind (Gary Meyers-Lucius Lavin), Brent Stait (Louis Feretti- Michael Kenmore {1 episode})
@bhorwith22 – wow, I’m impressed…!
Is there an official Facebook page for this? One I could perhaps “Like” heh
@Hallnavy GateWorld has a FB page https://www.facebook.com/GateWorld which you can like and there are post about this (and other stuff), but no “event”…
@daxmaryrussel
You were saying?
(Forum broken still :sadface: )
Found this site when I got real lost in Season 8 of Stargate (I was like when the heck did they find atlantis!) Anyways, I love the show and am quite depressed that I just finished Season 10 of Stargate SG1.
I still have quite a bit left w/ s4 &5 of Atlantis and then ofcourse S Universe.. But man the show just goes to fast! Addicting and glad I found Gateworld to keep me in touch
If you are looking for a bargain for watching the original Stargate movie, Verizon FIOS Video on Demand does have the movie. However, it is $9.99 to rent it; $14.99 for HD. ::Shaking her head.:: Did they see our “Rewatch” coming??? ::Grr Argh!::
Hulu just removed all full length episodes of SG-1 :-(
