Ben Browder and Brad Wright Talk Stargate … And Yep, Cameron Mitchell Is In the New Script

The second installment of Brad Wright’s “Conversations in Sci-Fi” arrived this morning, with a lengthy and fascinating conversation with Stargate SG-1 and Farscape actor Ben Browder.

Browder appears as Wright’s guest on his new podcast, hosted by The Companion. The two talk about everything from the relationship between a writer and an actor to Stargate’s cast and directors, Ben’s own son becoming an Air Force pilot, and the joys and trials of filming Stargate: Continuum — from travel and polar bears to F-15s, submarines, and Richard Dean Anderson learning his lines at 3 a.m.

Browder played Lt. Colonel Cameron Mitchell on the series. Wright started off by telling him that he is currently working to get a new Stargate project picked up, and Mitchell is in it.

“When we spoke more recently I hinted to you that I’m trying to get another one going — another Stargate going, with MGM,” Wright told him. “And nothing has happened yet because COVID put a big hole in Los Angeles (as you may well know). … We had plans that have been slowed. Let’s put it that way.”

“But it was fun typing Mitchell again, I have to say. … There’s no guarantee that anything I’ve written will even happen. But it was fun to do. And it’s fun to play in that sandbox again.”

Wright later responded to a fan question about whether Ben’s character would appear in a future Stargate production. “I’ve written the character Mitchell in a script,” Wright said. “Whether that sees the light of day or not, I have no idea. I would love it to happen and I hope it still does. … If we could get some of the band (or most of the band) back together that would be a good thing!”

Ben Browder and Amanda Tapping behind the scenes of Stargate: Continuum

Just a few other highlights from their conversation:

  • The Navy intel guy in the Arctic took Richard Dean Anderson’s movie script, because it was marked “TOP SECRET” on the cover.
  • When Ben was hired he spent two and a half weeks binge-watching the entirety of Seasons One through Eight. He wanted to see not just the highlights but all of SG-1, “warts and all.” (It not only got him familiar with the series and its mythology, but empowered him to call out the writers on continuity issues later.)
  • Ben praises Brad for the mind-boggling lift of working as a showrunner, and producing two different shows at the same time (with Robert C. Cooper and the rest of the team) when SG-1 and Atlantis were airing together.
  • After producing 40 hours of television for three years, Wright said that he likes the current streaming model of 10-episode seasons for storytelling. “I like 10 episodes. You can really concentrate on 10 episodes,” he said. “It feels like a breeze.”
  • The advantages (and constraints) of filming Farscape in Sydney, Australia — and how a creature shop-heavy series like that could benefit from contemporary filming technologies such as the Volume.
  • Ben talks through the two Farscape episodes that he wrote, Season Three’s “Green Eyed Monster” and Season Four’s bonkers “John Quixote.”

Stargate: Continuum (2008)

Wright’s new podcast launched in March, with guest Michael Shanks (“Daniel Jackson”). Next up is SG-1 co-star Amanda Tapping (“Samantha Carter”), who recorded her conversation with Wright this week (notably, prior to today’s confirmation of Amazon’s purchase of MGM and the Stargate franchise).

    • I think Janet should stay dead (but am open to possible parallel universe doppelgängers visiting, but not staying). I recently rewatched SGA Season 3's "Sunday" and thought Carson Beckett's death was cheapened because I knew they permanently brought him back from the dead.

Sometimes the heroes die. Janet Fraiser, Jacob Carter, George Hammond. We just have to live with the tragedy and move on.

  • I wanted to word this kindly but I'm not sure how... For me, Ben Browder never really clicked. At all. I did enjoy him in Farscape but in SG1... No. I'd personally much rather see Joe Flanigan return. I suppose it's too much to hope that Momoa would throw a new Star Gate a cameo. I was hoping he'd have pushed a McCain and Shepherd cameo as Altantean guards in Aquaman.

    • Sorry you feel that way. He clicked with me. I could have done with more seasons with Mitchell leading the team. Different strokes for different folks, I suppose.

      • Hey, in the end, all that matters is that we get new Stargate. That dominates all else in this discussion, right?

  • Certainly a lot of nostolgia coming back reading this!
I sure do hope Brad's vision for a new series works out

  • so amazon now owns stargate and 007 - Can we have new stargate now please amazon

  • Incredible News. I want the entire band back. And for the record, I loved SG U as well as SGI and Atlantis. Loved them all. Great continuity

  • Ben Browder did not click with a lot of viewers. A widely popular opinion of his character was ‘he’s just so annoying.’

    • Agreed. He 'could' click. He could win as many over as Richard Dean Anderson did. 'But'... he needs to adapt his acting style. For a start, work out what makes anyone 'annoying'? I would argue cockiness and how people talk when they are said to 'like the sound of their own voice' are aspects that resonate most with 'annoying'. RDA talking sounded like Carter or Jackson in how you could imagine any of your colleagues speaking, that made it seem more 'real' to fans. Browder talking sounded more like "everyone listen to me". Just perception, not looking to win over others.. I think we would agree we would all like any new show where fans again feel as they universally said they felt about the first 8 seasons.

  • re: "deal with it" - Disagree. Many would rather have no more (of this produced) Stargate than see Ben Browder again. Fine actor, nothing personal, but Jack o' Neil was quirky, funny, charismatic whereas Cameron Mitchell is just cocky all the time. Jack O 'Neil would never interrupt T'ealc in the same way as Mitchell (Browder). If Browder returns he needs to watch the early shows again and fine-tune his character, extend his repertoire so it's not the same for all parts he plays. Quotes about his "grandma used to say.." Cringe
Him and Beau Bridges's over the top acting akin to the theatre, ruined the last two seasons. How about a new Stargate from a new direction like how they relaunch Batman all the time? Could/should keep any of the 'original' SG1 that want to restar but try a new (Browder-less) angle that gets us all excited to see the next episode again. :)
Nothing against the man (or men in reference to Beau as well), it's the acting that isn't adapted to fit the part well enough compared to the others roles. At times it just became the Browder Show..
