Stargate Rewatch: SGU Season One

‘We’re not supposed to be here…’

It’s the final leg of the Stargate Rewatch! For the past 15 months thousands of fans from all over the world have been enjoying every episode and movie from the Stargate franchise all over again. In November we’re dialing up the ninth chevron and stepping through to the Destiny, with Season One of Stargate Universe.

The show premiered on Syfy Channel in 2009, introducing not only a new cast of characters and a new mission but also a very different style of Stargate on television: darker (both thematically and visually), hand-held, with characters more flawed and less heroic. For some it wasn’t Stargate enough; for others, it was the first Stargate they were actually interested in watching.

We want to hear from you! If you are blogging about your Rewatch, writing new fanfic, creating artwork, or doing something else related to SGU Season One, e-mail us a brief description and a link.

Learn more about the Stargate Rewatch and how you can join us for the final weeks of the fandom community event. Here’s your intro to the first season of SGU, with links to everything related on GateWorld.

As SGU opens Earth has been conducting an extensive research project on a rather unique planet — one with a rich naquadria core that is tied into the Stargate, capable of generating unimaginable power. Dr. Nicholas Rush has been unable to crack the code to activate the gate’s elusive ninth chevron. But when an upstart young video gamer is brought in to offer a new perspective, the gate is opened. On the other side is the Ancient deep-space vessel Destiny, sent unmanned to a distant galaxy long ago.

The Icarus Base’s compliment of military personnel and civilians are forced through the gate to the ship when the Lucian Alliance launch a surprise attack, and the rest, as they say, is history.

As the refugees fight to survive and hope for rescue, they struggle with still more problems: a ship they can’t control, a hostile alien race trying to seize Destiny, and what looks like an inevitable coup among their own people.

Perfect summary of SGU. It is probably my favorite Stargate show, even though I love SG-1 and Atlantis.

  • The reason SGU failed, well for oen part it was something different than the previous two but the biggest was there was no good opening credits. Loved the show as well as I love Sg-1 and SGA and wished it would have lasted longer but we wouldn't be doing this. But yes if it had a biggere opening sequence like SGA and SG-1 then it would have made it.

  • The SG-1 and SGA rewatch was fun but I'm going to have to end my participation here. I'm surprised it even got an entire season and even more surprised it got a second season. I am a long time Stargate fan so I watched both season just hoping it would get better. It didn't. The only character that was worth a damn was Eli. I didn't care what happened to anyone else. Every week I was hoping they would find a cool way to kill of Chloe.

  • TW- I have to disagree with you. While I do not like the current trend of not having a credit sequence, I have never started, continued, or stopped watching a show because of the opening credit sequence. If opening credit sequences helped bring in viewers, we would not see shows getting rid of them like we do right now.

  • SGU is my favorite STARGATE!

Loved sg-1 when it was out, but always wanted more character development. SGU was the answer!

And if you didn't like that pilot episode...you just hate tv in general then

    :)

  • Thanks for the reminder, Chris -- I'd added it to the forum thread where nominations are taking place, but forgot to come back here with the fix.

  • oneme, Character development was all the show was and the characters ****** (except Eli). 95% of the show was fighting between the characters or someone crying. The Stargate mythology, team work, sense of adventure and heavy sci-fi stories were what made SG-1 and SGA so good. SGU had hardly any of that.

The only part of the pilot episode that was any good was the battle above Icarus planet, the part where they recruited Eli and Eli figuring out how to dial the 9th chevron.

If you liked SGU you might like: 90210, Smallville, The Vampire Diaries, Supernatural.

Go back and watch "200" from SG-1 where they had the parody of SG-1 where they were all over-dramatic teenagers. That was what SGU was. Stargate: 90210.
