GateWorld Podcast: ‘Faith’

Visit the GateWorld Podcast page for more about the show!

This week on the podcast we welcome back Justin Nolan from The 5th Race Podcast, sitting in for David, who is on convention duty. Justin and Darren discuss the ins and outs of “Faith,” last week’s new episode of Stargate Universe! We’ll talk about T.J.’s “happy” news and what that storyline might hold for the future, the downside of life on Destiny, civilian-military relations, and those super-advanced aliens we have yet to meet. We’ll also theorize on planet-making and just what that obelisk is. And we’ll hear what other fans thought of “Faith!”

We’ll also talk about Syfy’s decision to move Stargate Universe and its other Friday night dramas to Tuesdays, starting this fall (story).

Want to participate in our discussion? Call the voicemail line by Monday and tell us what you think of this Friday’s new episode of SGU!

  • Thanks - just what I waited for! (Though you'd sneaked out the podcast this time, I found it in the podcast section before it got to the news section). Haven't watched the new episodes (living in a far away galaxy does that) but I still listen to podcasts. Love them :)

  • I'm going to make an assumption an attempt to answer one of your quibbles. The assumption is that Destiny's FTL drive functions similarly to Star Wars hyperdrives, and I make that assumption because both of them have difficulties with gravity wells.
If that is true, then the reason Destiny couldn't change course and jump right back into FTL is that when it got knocked out its momentum carried it too far into the gravity well. It's like if you're driving a car and suddenly pass into an area with no oxygen, preventing the engine from firing. The car stops accelerating, but it doesn't stop moving. And until it does stop moving, it's going further away from the point where the engine will work again.
None of that explains why it took a month to slingshot back out of the system, though.

  • Joe Mallozzi mentioned on his blog that the aliens were able to get onto Destiny because Lt. James cut power to that section of the ship when the guns were causing power surges, hence no sheild. This would also mean they were never on board.

I was wondering the same thing myself before he explained it.

  • One thing that was not brought up is the prospect that it was the Furlings who created the planet.

  • What is your name?
What is your quest (glory, or to be a hero)
    What is your favourite colour?

Wow. you just earned yourself a new fan.

Recently started listening to the podcast, I am liking it so far!

My theory on the obelisk - it is some sort of control for maintaining the sun. the planet was a rouge planetoid that some aliens installed the sungenerator (obelisk) on for experimention. the planet has long since been abandoned, and probably wont feature in the series again.

  • When Destiny revealled its Sunscoops in "Light", i hit the roof, and for me, SGU hasnt topped that at all. The Obelisk in "Faith" was a let down, more questions than answers yet again.

(I think we've already established that Destiny is not operating at peak efficiency. Its Sunscoops dont fill up the fuel tanks, they cant use the full shields or weapons, and the screen that tells them that their stargate doesnt have the range to get them home is obviously broke as well.)

I would have expected to have seen a little more evolution in their character's relationships after a month on a planet together. Or not, the whole issue of 'how long have these people been on the ship' is a bit confusing to me. By the end of episode 8 they have only been there for 5 days? So the whole continuity is a mess? At most, including their little Month during "Faith", they've only been on board for six weeks? There should probably be some clarification, because while the lack of a time scale wouldnt normally cause a problem, it does here, the ticking clock is meaningless unless you actually know what time it is.

I love what theyre doing with Chloë, it seems to me like they are positioning her as the only person qualified to lead these people. Young is a total b@$7@£&, in some ways he's become worse than Lou Diamond Phillips.

Wilst "Faith" was a good hour of tv, it was not outstanding. It didnt make me sit forward on the edge of my seat (like hours of BSG did). I'm not willing to give up on SGU, (i've watched Stargate since i was 7, and religiously, Replicators gave me nightmares :/) BUT THEY NEED TO PICK UP THE PACE A BIT. There is nothing better than an episode that thunders along at a million miles per hour. ("Time", was probably the only Outstanding episode this season.)

PS. Looking forward to Peter DeLuise's outragiously off-topic Audio Commentaries on the DVD when it comes out :D (You can never have too many Hats)

  • Dont know how it works in America, but here in Sweden, most people prefer to go out on fridays. So for me it is a very smart move to move the show to Tuesdays. That for me is an obvious way of increasing the number of people watching the show.

  • That one caller from MN was waaay off about SG-1 not dealing with personal faith/religion. That was a huge overwhelming theme.

Tj was doing a 'stage whisper' to Mat about her pregnancy so it doesn't necessarily mean the others heard.

They actually hint at how the aliens grabbed Cloe during 'Divided', they kind of vacuumed her up in an old fashioned sci-fi alien manner. In general the force field keeps them out.

That lady complaining about soap operas is just recycling the same old anti-fan talking points. Again, I thought we we're doing that anymore on Gateworld?

  • @ProclarushTaonasAt: I know it's ridiculously easy to cover plotholes, after it's brought to light, using some mind blowing BS logic. So I guess the Aliens had a huge arrow outside the ship that said "cut hole here, shields down"?, and after that, hoped someone would wonder aimlessly into the path of the old skool "tractor beam"?
