GateWorld Podcast: SGU Season Two

Visit the GateWorld Podcast page for more about the show!

This week on the podcast we’re winding down our discussion of the second (and, as it turned out, final) season of Stargate Universe. Darren and David will recap the past season in its entirety, including some major storylines for several characters, the evolution of the crew, and the revelation of Destiny‘s mission. We’ll also talk about the Lucian Alliance, Destiny getting inside the team’s heads, the drones, and the people of Novus.

Before the main discussion, we’ll recap the Stargate Rewatch, which is now off and running here at GateWorld! (Look below for some related links.)

Call the Podcast Hotline! We want to hear your final thoughts on SGU — where it succeeded and where it failed. The show’s creators aimed at making a very different kind of Stargate, while still being faithful to the tapestry of the Stargate universe. Do you think they succeeded? Leave a voicemail now to join our conversation on “SGU Deconstructed.”

  • Your podcasts are excellent.

The one thing i keep getting back to is that despite the fact that i wanted to love this show, and i religiously watched SGU on tv, and i even bought the DVD for season 1... SGU was a pile of steaming s***.

Put it this way, if i wasnt a Stargate fan, i would have stopped watching after episode 6 "Water".

  • Hey, thanks for linking to my rewatch blog! (I'm number 'Two'). I think I'm getting more into the swing of it now (just typed up /Singularity/).

  • Well, an elightening podcast to say the least. It was interesting to note that the "main discussion" part of the podcast was more a huge "quibble" section more than anything else. It's nice to hear some purely personal opinions on the podcast. (not because I happen to agree with alot of it, but it "feels" more "real". At any rate, thanks Darren and David for the quick turn-around on this one, it is apreciated.

  • I for one, enjoyed SGU. Yes, if it hadn't had Stargate in the name I probably would not have watched it, but that's why we're Stargate fans. If Enterprise or Voyager had not been related to Star Trek, how many of us would have bothered with THAT show? And SGU was FAR more watchable than Voyager or Enterprise!

And while yes, season 1 had some MAJOR MAJOR faults in pacing, I think they delivered on season 2 and if you don't say that season 2 was a big improvement chances are you decided to check out after season 1 and not give it a chance.

Of course, the damage had already been done by the end of season 1 and most people already HAD decided to check out, but everybody I know in real life who are Stargate fans who stuck through it, even if they didn't like it at first because it was different by the end really liked it!

Now Stargate is over, and not only is there no longer any Stargate on, this is the first year since Star Trek: The Next Generation aired that there has been absolutely NO space drama series on television, and that's just plane sad. We need either A) George Lucas' Star Wars series or B) a new Star Trek series to come along and revitalize interest in that aspec of the genre because while grounded series like Eureka and Fringe are awesome my first love is the space-based stuff because that's what I grew up on.

...does Doctor Who count as a space-based drama? I love that show...

  • You lost me when declared Defying Gravity a great show. That show was a bad one, boring to tears.

I was thinking at one time of proposing an alternative to the death penalty: watch SGU, Caprica and DG for eight hours a day, for the next five years, and if you don't kill yourself in the mean time, you get your freedom.

I just finished rewatching Firefly and I can not believe some people compare it to SGU. Firefly was brilliant, SGU just a bad joke.

I really hope someday the people in power will return to making real SciFi, not soap operas in space.

  • Due to work, I didn't get to watch much of SGU when it was on Sci-Fi (or Syfy, whatever). I didn't care for it, mostly since it was not anything like SG-A. However, due to some down time at home, I did buy the the S1 SGU DVDs, and found that I really, really like it. I have just received S2 and look forward to watching it this weekend. I click on the subtitles, that has greatly enhanced watching it. I am sorry that it didn't last at least a 5-season run. Yes, some of the eps are not too exciting, but the dark side of the whole series is interesting, IMHO. I am sad that we Stargate fans have no more Stargate anything to look forward to. Perhaps TPTB at SyFy will eventually be booted out; could the new PTB listen to its audience and give better programming? (Get rid of wrestling and the stupid ghost stuff....Hello, SyFy!)

  • I strongly believe this is the Stargate we've been waiting for. High drama, real tension and fantastic acting, especially by Robert Carlyle. I really can't understand why people don't like this show. It boggles my mind. I love the quirky antics of O'Neill, Jackson, Sheppard & McKay as much as the next person. But it's been done, again and again. I think SGU is a refreshing take on the franchise. Why not give the sci fi element a little realism? Why not have aliens on a show that don't speak english for a change? Why not break away from the SG-1/SGA mold and do something other than teams going on missions to visit other humans (in pacific northwestern-like forests) light years away for once? Seriously.

This is a great concept for a show. I can barely wrap my head around the distance of "several billion light years" from Earth. It's fantastic. The Destiny is a huge ship too. Who knows what they could have discovered had the show been supported and given the chance to live on. How are folks not digging this? I love all things Stargate. As bummed as I was to see SGA get canceled, this feels like the right step forward for the franchise now. The old formula is just old. And yet, that's what people wanted. Unbelievable.

Syfy cancelled the best show on television. SGU was the best thing to come out of the franchise. Period.

  • I too loved SGU. I just watched the repeat of the finale on Sky HD and once again was captivated. Oh, and thanks for not censoring the final episode, Sky ("F**k the French" was still visible).

  • Thank you for posting a link to my Stargate re-watch blog (I'm the third one next to Fan Reviews). My thanks to folks who have taken a look at my blog. Comtraya!
